I meticulously counted out preds and amlodipine before a 4 day trip to Amsterdam. So far so good but, on arrival, found only enough amlodipine for 2 nights..aaaaagh, panic, what now? Found a chemist suspecting he would send me off to a doctor's to then return with a prescription. 'How many would you like? Asked he. We agreed on 2 weeks worth as bank hol this w/e plus ordering it from home gp. He handed them over for a price... I could have kissed the man!!! Would/could a chemist do that at home?

Old age, pred or just plain stupid?
To be fair, I have had this help in Edinburgh, but stingy amounts at a price. So if we are idiots there are plenty of us. 🤣
I love Amsterdam and the laid back Dutch. I hope you have, had a wonderful time and have brought back tulip bulbs. Mine flower year after year.🌷
Yes, the Medicines Act permits Pharmacists to make an emergency supply at the request of a patient. The rules are quite lengthy but the main points are as follows. If the item is a prescription only medicine the pharmacist must satisfy themselves that the request is both genuine and necessary and it would not be possible for the patient to register as a temporary resident at a local practice in order to get a prescription. A max of 30 days supply may be made. Controlled drugs may not be supplied. An entry must be made in the POM register. You will have to pay for the cost of the drugs and possibly a professional fee to cover the paperwork and phone calls etc. Unfortunately these days people try to abuse the system and the General Pharmaceutical Council reprimand pharmacists severely if the rules are not adhered to. So if you feel you are being grilled, that's why.
Neither old age or stupidity, just human.
Last night, Thursday, I noticed that there was still a 5mg tab of delayed release Pred in the Wednesday compartment of my pill box. Had I forgotten to take it on Wednesday? Had I put two tabs in the Wednesday box by mistake. Will never know. I think I survived it, whichever it was.
Don’t you just hate it when that happens ? X
Not possible in UK I think. When we lived in Spain we could get most drugs over the counter if we paid for them. The chemists were not being paid by the government for the prescriptions they dispensed for their Health system, so they often ran out of drugs because they couldn't afford to re-order them. We often had to shop around to find a chemist that had stocks available!
I think PMRnewbie's post above applies to the UK. And last time I looked Edinburgh was still in the UK
No-one should be left without emergency medication - you may only get enough to keep you going until you can get to a doctor but they won't necessarily insist you go to A&E to get supplies.
Oh dear Tizzie, what are you like??? It's great that you got sorted though, hope you had a lovely time and didn't tire yourself out too much!! Did you get to 7mg? xx
