Off Piste.......................

OK, this is not about PMR or GCA, but it is about money.

I am taking a liberty and posting this information just in case you know someone who might benefit,. You can tell me off, but it just might help someone who is also a carer for a range of disabilities not only mental impairment. .

As a full time carer for the past 4 years, I only found out about the following this year.

Due a Council Tax Discount?

Here is how to claim by going to this website which explains exactly how to claim this benefit.

moneysavingexpert.com/news/...

Extract below

"By law, someone who has been medically certified as having a permanent condition that affects their intelligence and social functioning (eg, Alzheimer's or severe learning difficulties, but many other conditions may apply) is 'disregarded for council tax purposes' in England, Scotland and Wales".

I did not know about this until this year. I claimed and now have a 25% discount on my Council Tax and it has enabled me to pay for more help.

Great bit of info and advice, jinasc, thank you. It’s going to be of particular benefit to my neighbour who at the age of 87 is the main carer for his severely disabled wife and going through an especially difficult time at the moment.🌷

Hi jinasc

Do you have a link to this info please? I looked up the website but could only find reference to the 25% discount where someone has mental impairment

Thanks

Linda

Hi Linda,

Might help looking at your local council website. I found attached on mine, but others should say similar

“What you're entitled to will depend on your circumstances. Find out if you're eligible and how to apply for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support.

If any of the following apply to you, you may be entitled to Housing Benefit/Council Tax Support and other Welfare Benefits:

You're on a low income (employed or looking for work)

Your savings are not more than £16000, unless you are receiving Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or making a claim for Second Adult Rebate

You have dependent children

You're ill or disabled

You're caring for someone

You have been bereaved

You're pregnant or have recently had a baby”

Or just ring your local council, social services department.

I was worried about going 'off piste' but your replies have re-assured me.

Twin, I am so pleased you can now help your neighbour a bit more. I know you help all the time.

Thank you all.

While you are on this if anyone had payment protection insurance (ppi) for a mortgage or credit cards they no longer have then get in touch with the bank and ask for claim forms. Even if you have claimed on them if you clarify that you didn't have it fully explained but were recommended it by seller then they may pay out. A friend of mine got it all back having felt pressured to take out insurance.

Sorry if inappropriate but you don't need a company. Bank will sort it. There are literally millions and millions of pounds gone unclaimed. That's why they keep extending deadline. All I will say is 14k not unknown.
