Dozy Date. 😞

SheffieldJane profile image
β€’101 Replies

This morning, after a bad night, I inadvertently took my 100 microgrammes of Thyroxine twice. Realised the moment it was down my throat. I had just taken yoghurt and was supposed to take 7 mgs of Pred. Not sure what to do now. I haven’t taken Pred because of all the Thyroxine coursing around. I will later.

Has anyone with the two conditions done this? Can it be put right? Should I just ignore it and carry on with usual doses tomorrow?

I dread a day with banging heart. Woke up at 4 am with a short lived pain travelling down the side of my jaw and a sore eye, same side.

Many thanks.

Beyond my 'medical' capacities SJ - but I think it will all be OK - I'm sure more informed minds will answer soon - try not to stress in the meantime and if you can and check with a pharmacist or medical helpline.

Oh dear Jane,l take Thyroxine and am always worried l may take a double dose ,especially with the brain fog l seem to have,lt probably will not do any harm but perhaps your local pharmacist can give you advice on this, also just do not take any tommorrow then things should hopefully even out.

My son when a young'un thought that a white coat was all it took to be a doctor! In all seriousness he once said to me "Mum" yes "when I grow up I won't be able to be a doctor you know" Why ever not said I " I haven't got a white coat" said he. That wasn't the only thing he couldn't become. In a conversation he also thought that all he needed to play tennis like McEnroe was a headband and wrist bands.......and a racket of course!

Have you thought of getting one of those 'wallets' for your weekly tablets, with days of the week and times of the day? I'm sure I've read that PMRpro and others have them. Then you need to sit down only once a week and dish out all the doses into the right compartments. Jobs a good 'un, as Mark would say!

No specific advice to offer, apart from speaking to a pharmacist or 111. x

SheffieldJane profile image

I do that Rugger, I’ve got daily containers with times of day. I have recently started taking Thyroxine first and Pred with Yoghurt an hour or so later. It’s the change I expect. Thanks

Hi

I have done the same some time ago I contacted 111 and they said not to worry as some people who have thyroid problems are advised to take their dose weekly not daily .

Said may have a few palpitations but should be ok advised to take dose as normal next day .

SheffieldJane profile image

That’s useful. One poor soul on the thyroid site had taken a deliberate massive overdose and was ok thankfully.

Hi Jane I start the day with heart pills at 7am. Then thyroxine at 8am. Then pred at 9 am with food. Unless I have to be out early in which case I squeeze them up. In the evening heart pill at 6pm aspirin at 7pm and blood pressure pill at 8pm.

Have had add Mirtzapine at 10pm.

How I wished I could chuck them all out of the window. Lol

I find filling pill boxes are the only way to keep check on which ones I have taken....with pred fuzzy head

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJaneβ€’ in reply toDorsetLady

I did, I got a tremendous PMR pain in my shoulder which reminded me that it was not to be trifled with. It’s the keeping Thyroxine on an empty stomach well away from other drugs. Supposed to be good in the evening, I may do that but the insomnia may return and there’s Amitriptylin.

I hope my small crisis is of use to someone else. If I change a routine everything goes to pot. Thanks.

I take Pred. in the morning, Amitriptyline at 7:30 and Thyroxine at bedtime. I read somewhere that taking Thyroxine in the evening was a good idea and it fitted with the whole regime- seems OK and actually this year, I needed to reduce my Thyroxine for the first time in many years- could it be because it is more effective at night? Who knows!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJaneβ€’ in reply tosuzy1959

I read that too. Something Poopadoop posted I think. I think I’ll try but I worried about it keeping me awake which the double dose is doing. It doesn’t like any other drugs or anything on the stomach though. I am full of Rooibos tea at bedtime and that’s when I take the Amitriptylin for sleep.it’s maths and I hate maths.

Jane, snap, snap, snap! Friday morning, took my 6pm warfarin at 8am, i.o. Pred. Also, only realised after swallowing. Rang pharmacist to find out when next dose warfarin. He said to be sure to take the Pred. Take warfarin Sat at 4pm, and DON'T DO IT AGAIN!! YOU'D THINK AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, i'D KNOW BETTER. I have the dosette next to computer, and take Pred whilst reading the forum. Lack of concentration.

Yes. 3 weeks ago I took a double dose of thyroxine. Like you say it was just sliding down my throat when I realised. I actually just felt really rough that day. Wasn't sure if I imagined it. But I am down to 50mg so perhaps not a big deal for me. Hope you have survived the day.

Hi Jane. I've checked some toxicology sites and overdoses of less than 500 mcg do not require medical intervention or treatment with activated charcoal. Any aches or pains or fevers which you may develop must be treated with paracetamol NOT ASPIRIN. Aspirin displaces T4 and increases serum levels. Hope this reassures you.

Hi Jane, I have one of the weekly pill boxes and it tells me what I have or havnt done with my pills, couldn’t remember any of it otherwise. I also take 100mg of thyroxine but have taken it in the evening, well away from all the other tablets. Have done this for last 4 months and it seems to suit me. Hi, I was told by GP that I should take the prednisolone in the morning and not to take my thyroxine for at least 5 hours afterwards. Hope that helps. So pred for early breakfast and thyroxine or lunch statins for supper!!! How exciting.

SheffieldJane profile image

The only time that I am sure that I have an empty stomach is first thing in the morning. 5 hours! How can we achieve that? I have been leaving about 90 minutes. Then there’s the Adcal ( not to be taken near Pred). It needs a better brain than mine to work out. I have taken Thyroxine wrongly for 30 years. It is a wonder I am still here!

I wouldn't worry too much Jane, it's only one dose and at the worst you may feel a bit lively, shall we say!! Hope you took your pred as normal though and the regular dose of levo the next day. You're on a lot of the same meds as me and I have the little boxes for my tablets...the more tablets I was on the less I trusted myself to get it right!!! I take my levo as soon as I wake up along with Omeprazole and Vit K2, the about an hour later, after yoghurt or something I take my pred.....then 2 hours after that it's the Adcal!! :-) Take care. xx

Oh gosh what’s this about Jane? Following thyroid cancer I too have to take thyroxine and pred in the morning. Are they incompatible ? I just swig them down. Ohhhhhh dear.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toDaisychain12

There is no direct interaction between them - but being on pred may have an indirect effect on thyroid function via the HPA axis (the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal set-up) and thyroid stimulating hormone in particular.

But many patients are told to take thyroxine on an empty stomach - because a lot of foods, including milk, affect absorption. And since pred is better taken with food - that gives you a direct contraindication straight away. Not a problem - unless you want to take your pred very early with food so it is working by the time you get up. You wake, take your thyroxine, wait an hour and then have breakfast and your pred.

A lot of people who have other morning medications take their thyroid medication at night - well after their evening meal. And find it works well - some find it even works better.

Do many PMR sufferers get offered consultations with an endocrinologist PMRpro? Just wondering ...........

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toMamaBeagle

Not normally - but they should be if they suffer any symptoms of adrenal insufficiency while reducing slowly below about 5mg. One endo told a senior member of the charity that HE was of the opinion we should all see one. Others endos just snort and ask why the patient is there.

MamaBeagle profile image
MamaBeagleβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

Thank you for that info. I was beginning to wonder why it's not the norm as the endocrine system seems a bit like the Underground - inter - related, interconnected with knock on effects. And so many people on the site seem to have other endocrine problems already!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassadorβ€’ in reply toMamaBeagle

Exactly - and it should be an integrated service, a team. But it isn't. It probably was 25 years ago - in the days when consultants talked to one another about patients, But now they can't even refer sideways, there is this utterly stupid concept of referring back to the GP who then has to refer to the new specialist. Adding months to the patient journey to a diagnosis.

And when they reinvent the wheel which no doubt will - they'll think they are so imaginative and have created something startlingly new!

piglette profile image

My father blames it on the integrated dining room! In the good old days consultants had a separate dining room and would discuss cases over lunch and often sorted things out then. piglette profile image
pigletteβ€’ in reply toPMRpro

I know the problem. I suppose I am just as guilty. My brother has a theory if they organised the appointment system better fewer parking places would be needed and also less waiting room space. I could not believe it when I had to turn up on a Sunday morning at 7.30am for the op on my leg. I then sat all day and was sent home as they could not operate until 7.30pm. Did they really have that many people coming in for plastic surgery as emergencies on a Sunday? You see these things on TV and they spend their time talking about beds or lack of them. They then have some young girl rushing around organising them, who really has not got a clue although she is backed up by the continuous meeting, while you have world class surgeons sitting around or giving up for the day and wandering down to the pub.

PMRpro profile image

I was not the only one who sat around all day, next to the kitchen and we were nil by mouth! They must have known in advance how many theatres they had and have some idea of beds, particularly as they try to clear people out on Fridays. I am sure they could improve the admin.
