There was an article in the British Medical Journal this week about a twenty six year research study in the US into gluten. They reckoned giving up gluten was bad news unless you were celiac.

I think a related issue is the changes to wheat over the years. We actually are consuming more gluten than we used to, and this could be a problem. However, my feeling is it's much more likely we are reacting to some of the chemicals now used in production. You may or may not be aware that glyphosate is used to dessicate wheat (which so far remains non-GMO thanks to Canadian farmers) when it is harvested. In other words, shortly before it is going to be prepared for consumption. I think this is, in North America at least, a far bigger problem than gluten. I don't know if glyphosate has an effect on disorders like PMR, but it has definitely been linked to gut problems. Look up Dr. Thierry Vrain.

Yes - all the Mosanto roundup they use.

Some people are sensitive wheat itself as well as gluten.

I have less and less confidence in the mainstream medical profession etc. They all insisted for years, along with industry and the media that margarine was better off us than butter!

These were researchers and took 26 years to get their findings. I should not imagine they were linked with the food industry if they took that amount of time.

Oh right. Interested - where did you read it? I do agree though that 'gluten' per se is not necessarily the big issue for most in consuming wheat.
