have booked usual annual one week away in march, cuba, but am wondering what further precautions one should take, when away and wanting to take in beach, sun, sand etc, anyone out there have this concern
sunshine while on prednisone: have booked usual... - PMRGCAuk
sunshine while on prednisone
I had a bad reaction while sunbathing in Greece in May some years ago. I had not noticed the advice in the leaflet in the prednisolone box, which is definitive in stating the probable results of exposure to strong sunlight.
I went to Mexico and sat under the shelters at the beach in the afternoon and had a beer and the best calamari ever. During the day I was under the awnings at the pool bar and drank fruity cocktails which must not have had much booze... because I never felt giddy. At home I might have one cocktail but never as much as when on vacation...I actually did really well... I tanned but did not get burnt.
Ohohoh!!! There was a terrific storm the night before our departure and for the life of me I don't know why I didn't take extra meds... It scared me to think I could run out so take extra medication with you and then Have a Great Time!!!!!
God bless
Linda
I went to Cuba last year and visited a travel clinic at my hospital. They recommended that I get a hepatitis A shot, and warned me to NOT drink the water in any form, not to brush teeth, not in ice cubes in drinks, no salads, only fruit that can be peeled...our Road Scholar guide gave the same advice to all of us...and no one on our trip got sick. I heard horror stories from other travel groups. I had a trip to remember.....enjoy your trip..Cuba is a beautiful country.
Hi,
Just be mindful of sun - Pred thins the skins, so you need to be extra careful of burning.
Take a few extra tablets, and all medication in hand luggage along with copy of prescription. Check your travel insurance covers PMR/GCA. Get assistance at airport if you have any mobility problems, you have to walk a lot further than you realise sometimes, and it gets you through security quicker and easier.
Most of all, enjoy!
Agree fully with all DL said.
I'd just add, think before doing something. "Could I do it at home?" If the answer is no - you very probably won't manage it while on holiday. Although I managed to do a lot of things in China I wouldn't have tried at home! I climbed a LOT of steps with no problems! But I was on only 5mg pred and there is a possibility that the PMR was in remission - or at least very quiet!
As others have said - you may need high Factor sunscreen. Even I burnt on higher doses of pred.
