Hair colouring

Hi everyone, I am currently on 10mgs pred for pmr, and to cheer myself up was thinking of having some semi permanent highlights done to my hair. Does anyone know if this is contra-indicated with being on the pred. I was diagnosed early April and have reduced from 20mgs since then. Hope this does not sound too trivial!

I had some pink highlights when I was on more than 10, I loved it! I didn't notice anything that went wrong.! I never thought to check it out - oops? it certainly helped my mood! I'm on 10 now and going to have it done again.

Cheers

Thank you , that is reassuring, will also ask my hairdresser, I am sure she said she had clients who were on steroids, pink sounds fun!

Crumb1, it was fun, I've never done anything like that before....I'm 68 with grey hair.....I sent my hairdresser photos I liked and it turned out great ....good luck!

Hi Crumb1,

I've carried on having these things done at the hairdresser, he's a better listener than my GP and it's a boost to my morale. I just find the seats uncomfortable and leaning back for a hair wash a bit of a trial. No adverse effects from the chemicals either. Long sleep after, though which squashes the blow dry. Having your nails done is a nice thing, particularly toes.

Hi

Yes I thought it would be a good morale booster and a couple of hours when I have to sit, many thanks

Hello Crumb1

I have my hair coloured on a regular basis and have bleached highlights too. I have been diagnosed since June and have had two hair sessions since.

I am on my reducing level of 13 mg from 15 mg pred and have had no problems with my colour.

Go for it, cheer yourself up.

I have my head painted every 4 weeks to stop me looking like a badger. I do find that the colour fades at the roots a little sooner than it used to but as the pred has given me curls and slightly thicker hair I can't complain.

Hi just to add to other replies I've had PMR?GCA seven years now and until a year ago I was having my hair coloured/bleached 3/4 times per year - no side effects. My hair has got a lot thicker since being on steroids and now is going very grey, so decided I quite like the new look and it saves me a few pennies too. Whatever you decide enjoy your treat.

No reason not to because of being on pred - except for some people their hair goes very frizzy/dry/hay-like and more chemicals MIGHT not help it. The hairdresser might be able to advise there. Personally, the thought of spending all that time (not to mention money) on it is off-putting but I never did like going to the hairdressers!

Go for it!

We all need something to boost our morale, and a good hairstyle does it for me.

Get mine done about every three to four months, and have done since well before diagnosis, even when my hair was very lank and lifeless. Did stop for about a year for various reasons. Was hoping it had turned into a nice silver so I didn't need to bother any more, but unfortunately it didn't, so back to the colour.

Highlights or foils are better than full head colour, you can leave more time between treatments as the root growth doesn't show so much - and loads of colours to choose from!

Dyed mine every shade of red since I have been on Pred. This was in celebration of being able to even wash my hair myself. Before pred I couldn't lift my arms to do it myself. I have oily hair and have found that its a bit drier now and grows like fury. I was losing it at one point but its growing back now :) I too look like a badger if I don't keep putting the paint on :D I do test if I use a new brand of colour but usually stick to one usual brand John Frieda mainly coz I only dye my hair with it and not the bathroom too! Go for it if it makes you feel good.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with PMR in Sept last year. In August when I was in pain I went to hairdresser just for wash and cut and had a back wash. I had trouble with pains in my neck and head for weeks afterwards, so now I always insist on a front wash. I have been colouring my hair at home for years, but not done it since I got PMR. I am currently on 10mg, been trying to reduce to 9 since last November but keep getting flare-ups. Think it's time to try a bit of colour again. I am 69 with quite a lot of grey and it makes me feel so old!

Hello Crumb1 and all the following posts. Brilliant that this topic has come up. I asked my Neurologist, a few years ago, if all my hair colouring could possibly have any adverse effect with the Pred, for GCA. He said no. I was colouring my hair prior to GCA, 10 years ago. I am 69. Last year, I thought I would let all the colour grow out and see how grey suited me. I liked it, but this week I have decided to go back to proper colour and will be going to the hair salon, as I can't manage myself. Its the best booster for me!

I am now white blonde - well, that's my line and I'm sticking to it. But I have been since my early 40s so it doesn't really change how I feel. ;-)

Hope that's how mine would be - but no such luck, a greyish mousy colour - so something had to be done!

Mind you as a daughter of a hairdresser always had to be properly 'turned out' and it's stuck, and I do like a bit of pampering now and again!

PMRpro profile image

I don't find a hairdresser's appointment pampering - too uncomfortable by half! But yes - my hair has to be right or I feel a mess. Struggling a bit with the hairdresser at the moment - she started off so well too...

Oh dear,

Hope you're ok - not too close to the earthquake epicentre, but still a bit scary I guess.

My daughter was close enough to the big one in Christchurch NZ few years back, and although they are used to them she said it was a bit hairy. Parts of Christchurch are still in a bit of a mess, so guess if it's a rural area it's even worse.

We're about 400+ miles north of the epicentre, it was barely felt there though the police did get a few calls! We had a rash of tremors about 4 years ago - we are also on a fault line but it is very unusual to have wobbles.

Good, glad you're okay.

Hi I have been on pred since Feb 60mg slowly reduced now down to 10 and have coloured my hair all the time with no problems

It will cheer you up x

Hi, I noticed my hair would not accept any colour when I was on 60+ mg daily, but as my dosage was gradually lowered to 40 mg I had no problem with hair colour. Now I am on 7.5 and there are no worries about that at all. Good luck to you and enjoy your new look.

So pleased to have so much helpful advice. I had my hair highlighted last evening with foils, and so far so good, very natural looking result. Up to now my hair condition has been unchanged, only about five months into my pmr journey of course , but keeping positive . Thanks again for the great support
