What to Eat

Hello everyone

I'm from Northern Ontario Canada and was Diagnosed with PMR 10 days ago, went from 50mg to 20mg after 7 days. Feeling a bit stiff but coping. Does anyone have a list or website of what and what not to eat for those inflicted with PMR. Would really appreciate comments.

Thank you,

Gil

Hi Gil,

Don't think there are any magic foods as such. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg, easy on the carbs and processed foods.

You can easily find a list of recommended anti-inflammatory foods, and foods to avoid - just type that question into your search engine. Sometimes the info is a bit conflicting, and we are all different so it's sometimes a matter of experimentation.

Sensible diet really and gentle exercise should see you through.

Sure others will come along with their own recommendations.

There is no specific include/exclude diet for PMR really but several people have found that they feel better for including decent amounts of anti-inflammatory foods in their diet: oily fish, turmeric and ginger spring to mind but I'm no expert there - I tried including and excluding all sorts of things and it didn't seem to make any difference! I was gluten-free at the time PMR started (I'm allergic to wheat starch) but now I eat non-durum wheats and it doesn't seem to make any difference. I have had no alcohol periods - no difference in the PMR. But everyone is different and a bit of experimentation may identify something that doesn't help (or helps) you.

A lot of us have found that excluding carbs in general makes us feel better and helps avoid weight gain - processed carbs is a no-brainer really! It also reduces the risk of developing steroid-induced diabetes. That also includes starchy root veg and some fruit - lots of carbs in apples and bananas for example if you decide to go low-carb! For info about low carb diets there is loads on the internet with recipes.

Why were you started at 50 mg? Did the dr suspect GCA? Hopefully the rest of the recommended taper will be slow and doable for you. Don't reduce again until that stiffness has gone again, and then only by steps no larger than 10% of the dose. If you get to 10 okay you should consider the dead slow method, developed by PMRPro:

I agree about reducing total carbs in diet, and eliminating refined carbs and sugar. I have a cup of ginger tea every night, same family as turmeric and supposed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Grate about a teaspoon of ginger root, pour boiling water over and steep until cool enough to drink, about 15 minutes. Take your calcium and D supplements, and do a little research about other micronutrients you should probably add - like magnesium, Vitamin K2 and a few others.

Hi Gil, I add a lot of turmeric to my cooking on stir fried veg etc , also in omelettes , I also take a turmeric supplement tablet , they say turmeric is one of the best anti inflammatory things you can add to your diet, hope that is useful 👍😀.
