Generally, if the pain is PMR nothing but pred really works.

Even though you are at a very low dose of pred, your muscles are still intolerant of acute exercise and will let you know if you overdo it. Shovelling snow strikes me as a good way of causing muscle pain. Voltaren may help - but be careful. It is an NSAID (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug) and NSAIDs and pred don't mix in terms of gastric irritation. It doesn't matter what form the NSAID is used in, oral, topical or injections, the risk remains. Have you tried arnica cream/gel? A lot of us have found that useful.

Rest is the best therapy - and don't shovel snow! Find some help.

I don't find that topical application of a NSAID is any use for large joints or muscles such as shoulders and knees. They may have a small effect on things like thumbs or wrists. Anyhow, as Pro says, don't mix with pred. I find that a hot bath relaxes sore muscles more effectively than anything else.
