Injections by x/ray. Good Morning is there anyone on the Forum that may have had these type of x/rays.?

This coming Tuesday the 8tth July I have a Hospital Appointment in the x/ray Dept to have injections into my savoiliac joints ordered by my Rheumatologist .He is hoping that it might help my pain and to get me mobile again. I'm not sure of the procedure but believe its quite a straight forward procedure .. I hope so as I am missing out on so much lately as its a struggle to even get on to my mobility scooter. A few days after this I hope to go on Holiday for 2 weeks and give the injections chance to work while I relax by the lovely River Avon watching the world and the Wildlife go by .Best wishes. trish29

I had an injection in my wrist under x-ray. It was done that way so that the consultant could see exactly where he was putting the needle. In my case surgery was eventually needed and was most successful

I have my joint injections done under ultrasound scan and its really cool because you can watch it on the screen. It simply makes sure they get the good gloop in exactly the right place and that they don't hit anything they shouldn't going in or out with the needle.

I recently had an injection into the elbow joint where I have a tricky little subluxed nerve thing going on and it was perfectly done via scan...

I have also had joint injections the old fashioned way... where the rheumy pokes the affected bit until you scream with the appropriate level of agony and then he sticks you with the needle...

Much prefer the scan version

Thank you iforget .. I think I prefer the first version you have given me . I don't fancy having to scream as I have done enough of that recently.. I'm being Positive and pray it works but I wonder how long it lasts ? I suppose the answer is.. How long is a piece of string ? I know I am lucky to be having it .My Rheumatologist has got me in pretty quick for the x/ray .I hope you are getting on OK as I know we have been in contact with each other in the past. Unfortunately it is a bit hit and miss... I have had varying success at different times but have always had relief...a couple of times I went back for a top up and that was without exception better

I was a bit scared the first time because I did not know what to expect and my imagination ran riot... but now I know what's involved, its no problem at all.

If you are not squeamish ask if you can see the image on the screen...watching the process gives you something to concentrate on and is actually fascinating. The guy who has done my last few has been brilliant and has explained all the various anatomy and showed me the problem in real time scan. I find it much easier to cope with things when I understand them.

My needle phobic hubby said I was ghoulish to watch the needle go in and to see the liquid injected as it moved around the joint but it was fascinating and a huge distraction. I liked to take an active role in something that was going to make things better

Thank you iforget and Badgergirl for your replies.. It all sounds very interesting and I just hope and pray that the injections work .. I'm not usually squeamish with needles it just depends on how I am on the day .. Like you I am interested in what goes on with my body so it would be good to see where the injections are aimed for especially as I can't walk at all at the moment . Everyday is a challenge and my main aim with my Osteopath at the moment is to get me back in a Swimming Pool .That would be heaven. What would we do without this Forum ? The questions are always so interesting and I know I have learnt a lot from it re medications and conditions that go alongside the PMR /GCA .. Hi Badgergirl .. How are you doing ? I hope you are feeling better and not in pain .. Well I had my spine injections today and I was looked after so well by the Doctor and the nursing team.The procedure was explained to me and didn't take too long at all.. I am so lucky to be at such a caring Hospital. I just hope the injections work .. I have to take it easy for a few days and then hopefully I will be able to get away on Holiday. The pain down the left buttock and. all down the left leg has eased off slightly , for weeks now I've felt like I've had an electric Drill stuck to my bottom. I just hope they will help me with my walking ..best wishes trish29

Hi trish29. I really hope your injections work. You were in pain for too long. Were the injections for PMR pain or something else?

My flare is still horrendous and I am still in bed. I had to go up to 25 mg today as 6 days on 20 mg didn't help. Hopefully I will start feeling better tomorrow. Badgergirl

Hi Badgergirl .. So sorry you are still in pain , I really feel for you as I know what you are going through .. I am feeling that bit better but I know I have to go steady and not overdo things and try and not get stressed about getting things together for our holiday ..just to get away in a different enviroment might help and as long as my pain level is manageable I may as well be up at the River Lodge all on 1 level as be at home ..The injections I had today was to try and help the Osteoarthritis in the spine which the Medics believe is through being on steroids 10 years and to help the PMR / Sciatic pain..I really needed these injections a long time ago .. I have been told today that I can also wear the IOmg Butran patches that I have but I've tried not to because I have to start on Leflunomide when I get back from holiday and I didn't want to have to many chemicals in me when I start that. I hope the 25 mg Pred works for you .I am on 15 mg at the moment but I will monitor it while I am away as the injections were steroid. Not easy is it ? Take care now and get plenty of rest .. I hope you are still more improved today and managing to get ready for your holiday.

I am still no better on 25 mg. I have a searing pain between my shoulder blades when I try to walk up or down stairs or try to ditch down or stand up. My bloods were tested for other things but came back normal yesterday. My spine x ray was normal too. My CRP was sky high though. I don't want to go up to 30 mg so will hope 25 mg will work soon. I am so fed up with being in bed in nice weather.

Hello Badgergirl.. Yes I have been good and had a fairly quiet day and it was my cleaners day today so she did a lot for me .I gave myself this little Luxury when things went pear shaped this year and I just can't keep up with the housework etc and ironing is definitely a No No.. I haven't had too bad a day as the pain level is more capable, I have just taken some painkiller with a cuppa so that should settle me for a few more hours.. My spine is sore but the Doctor who did my injections said it would be for a good few days ..I'm not allowed to lift so Pete and I are going to start the packing tomorrow and hopefully by Saturday I will be feeling a lot better .. I feel sorry for you stuck in bed and as I have just been through all that in this nice weather I know how boring it is .Why don't you try a couple of mg more steroid to see if it helps , I found with trial and error that I found the bearable dose for the amount of pain but I didn't jump too high because I felt that 1 mg at a time was better .. I got so much information from this Forum at the time that it helped me.. It seemed that there was a lot of people out there suffering the same as me.. hope you feel better tomorrow trish29x and a hug as long as it doesn't hurt .

I hope the extra 1 mg gives you a better night Badgergirl .. I have had so many bad nights and where my left leg goes heavy on me I have slept at either end of the single bed as its not so much pressure on the sciatic nerve, ive tossed and turned and swapped ends of the bed for so long now , I had a V pillow for my birthday which is nice and have slept propped up , any different position to ease the pain.I hope I have ridden most of the storm now but continue to try and conquer the exhaustion. I have been in the Spare room since February so as my partner can get his sleep and now I hope I can get the stregnth to help Pete get ready to get away for our holiday . These flares are awful and we just have to have patience .. take care trish29

Something not talked about much is how we have to sleep on our own. I know of others who do so. Sad but necessary. I must get a V pillow too! Badgergirl x
