Sorry, this is not directly related to PMR, but I wonder if anybody has had the TVT procedure done for stress incontinence? Some of the posts on Mumsnet are alarming, but the doctor says it's straightforward.

TVT
Hi can you tell me what is TVT have not heard of that before ,ritter Anne
Was it TVT that got a bad write up in the Daily Mail the other week? They have run a campaign in the past about it but this is the most recent article I can find:
dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...
There are many things from the DM I simply go "yeah right" at but in this case there does appear to be a bit of fire behind the smoke. One in 20 is the figure quoted for adverse events. I suspect that when it works well it is excellent - unless you are one of the 5% where it goes wrong.
I'd want more than my GP's assurance I think - and see if you get the warnings this article hints at.
Hi MoiraCT,
I live in Scotland and the Daily Record has been running a campaign against vaginal mesh which may be the same kind of thing as the tape.
I agree with PMRpro, usually I find stories in these type of papers alarmist but it would appear that these kind of products can have very bad side effects for some people.
Worth doing some more research, the Consultant Urologist should be able to tell you about known side effects and percentages of patients affected as part of the consent process.
Good luck.
Thank you both
The consultant told me he has done 1500 of these operations with no problem. I was at the hospital this afternoon for the pre-op visit, and the doctor there said there is a difference between the tvt tape that will be used to tighten the urethra and the mesh that was/is the bone of contention. Apparently it was larger pieces of mesh used as a sling which caused the problems. I'm going in on Tuesday so fingers crossed. As Eileen says, if you're one of the 5% it's not much comfort to know that most ops go well, but I'm hoping for the best. Moira
PS Although this seemed to be separate from PMR, it was while I had PMR that the coughing/sneezing/laughing problem got worse.
I think it is relatively common in PMR to be honest - I know a load of people who've had problems. Several of us have felt that we should have taken out shares in Tena! However - I managed fine with the smallest version and have just got to the stage when I think I will try without I don't think it is separate from PMR - I think some of the effects of PMR manifest years before we get t o the stage of being diagnosed with PMR. I had had identifiable PMR for 5 years pre-diagnosis but looking back some of the problems had been there even longer.
Yes, that's right, mesh caused all sorts of problems because in some patients it hardened. All the very best for Tuesday - where there are problems I imagine the surgeon doing it may have had something to do with it. There is all this fuss about making centres of excellence which I don't understand - if you need a procedure done you want it to be done by someone who does it a few times a week not a couple of times a month and who spends a lot of time looking at that particular bit of anatomy! If he's really done 1500 he knows what he's working with!
You know what i think girls i think its the preds they make all mussels go really soft and you have to start doing some sort of excise to get them working again I just look like a ball of flab but on reducing the preds i am starting to take shape again but very slowly I was always a keep fit person but you want to see me now i think someone sneaks in during the night with a bicycle pump,,the preds also weaken our vains but do not know how to make them strong again,,if anyone has any suggestions ? ,,
thanks for explaining TVT,,ritter Anne by the way girls lost my last chicken to day very sad she thought she was one of the dogs the last few months,.xx
