I don't know, but I have both and cannot trace any others in the family with either of them, or any other auto-immune condition. I was 57 at diagnosis with PMR and that followed several years trying to get a diagnosis.

Oh dear, not much help am I?

I have PMR and so does my mother, aged 92. She was diagnosed at 65 and so was I. She is still on prednisolone.

Last time I saw the rheumatologist she thought I might have fibromyelgia too. I am due to see her again in August but I think I don't have it (this is just a gut feeling!).

My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with pernicious anemia as the cause of death. Two doctors I have seen for myself and my mother have been interested in this fact and made a note of it. I think that maybe she had PMR but back in the sixties and early seventies it was not well-known. My mother was very fortunate to find a doctor at the start of her PMR who had just been on a course.

I think there is likely to be some hereditary element to the illness but as so little research has been done no-one can say.

There is currently an International Survey on both PMR & GCA

I don't know if anyone knows whether there is a connection between PMR and Fibromyalgia but there is a paper setting out a comparison between the two produced by a trustee of PMRGCAuk together with a member of the Fibromyalgia Association UK. If anyone is interested, just send me a message with your email via this forum and I will be happy to email a copy.

My father had PMR when he was 74. His symptoms were exactly the same as mine were when I was first diagnosed.

He died a year later of an unrelated condition, so we never found out how long it would have taken him to shake off the PMR.

Thanks to everyone and your reply's and advice. I do understand that various syndromes overlap to some extent....Also research is more advanced in America and wish information was shared with our medical GPs and hospitals too.

Thanks and best wishes to everyone suffering this conditions......
