Should I be checked?

Hi, I'm new here and I have a question. I'm 31 and my grandmother had ADPKD. My mother is now 50 and didn't show any symptoms. Should I be checked?

PS: My mother has two siblings, both in their fifties, and both have ADPKD.

Hi. Yes I would ask your up to be referred for an ultra sound scan, then your results will be sent to your gp. I found out that I got it when I was 32 I am now 49. My kidney function is 30%.

Hi Joseph, have you got any brother or sisters? if so they need to be checked to see if they have it or not. I got PKD and my brother didn't. I have 2 daughters, and one of them will have it but I am just letting them live a normal life until they do need to know more about it. Good Luck Joseph. Let me know how you get on.

Hi J. I'm sure there will be changes in medicines etc in years to come. How old is your brother?

My brother is now 25 years old.

I got checked at 32.

Hi, when you say your mother 'didn't show any symptoms', what do you mean by that?

Has your mother had her kidneys scanned?

At 50, if your mother has no cysts, then you are unlikely to have inherited ADPKD.

If you want reassurance, you can, of course ask your GP to refer you for a scan.

Hi and thank you very much for your reply. I've been to the GP last week and I've been prescribed a number of tests. My mother hasn't been scanned as far as I know.
