All,

What supplements do you take to help with overall liver health? Looking at Dose - has turmeric, dandelion powder, milk thistle, organic ginger powder. PBC since 2012 largely controlled but recently diagnosed with Fatty Liver now too so trying to find some help with that. Thanks!

I take Vitamin D as suggested by my gastroenterologist as I had low levels and due to PBC I am told I’m at moderate to high risk of arthritis. Other than that I briefly considered taking reservatrol but hot too much conflicting information on the internet about it. My GP said it should be fine but I decided not to risk it. I’m Indian so I have turmeric and ginger all day everyday as they are staple of most Indian curries and other foods. The only other thing I semi regularly take is psyllium husks but it’s not for PBC. It’s just that I don’t eat enough fiber and it helps to keep my cholesterol in check.

STOP Most of those you listed are for healthy livers. Your liver isn't a healthy liver! Stop supplements unless recommended by your hepatologist. Many that are made for healthy livers are made to flush it out which can be harmful to our livers.

Agree! I take bare minimum vitamin supplements and that is with approval from my hepatologist. I take only a daily multivitamin.

Good morning, my liver doc told me not to take turmeric as it increases bile production and our bile ducts are already under attack. Hope that helps. 😊

I’m not sure about the rest but turmeric makes me violently ill. Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea the whole shebang. I looked into it and it can be bad for liver health and cause the symptoms I was experiencing. When I stopped taking it, the symptoms went away. Eating it in small doses. Curries etc. seems to be fine but in vitamins or a turmeric supplement is not.

The one supplement has a total of 530 mcg of turmeric, milk thistle, and ginger. I will ask my hepatologist about it. 530 mcgs doesn't seem like that much. If it helps with other issues, I wonder if it would be ok. This disease can be incredibly frustrating.

My G.I. doc (that diagnosed me) said milk thistle was good. It's got a lot of research behind it. I'll have a tincture that I take. I take Vitamin D and B complex. I was deficient.

Thanks for sharing. My hepatologist told me that milk thistle shows no impact…so I stopped taking it. My liver enzymes are still slightly elevated after two years so maybe I should start taking MT again…has there been any impact on your lab numbers?
