I am an 81 year old male diagnosed a year ago with Stage 3; on 500 mg Ursodiol 2 x daily, my blood results have returned to normal, except for the erythrocytes.
My erythrocyte reading is off the char... - PBCers Organization
My erythrocyte reading is off the chart low, 4.48, but my gastroenterologist makes nothing of it, but it reflects my liver condition, yes?

Hi Stub
Erythrocytes are just red blood cells, the part of our blood that has hemoglobin which carries oxygen through out our body.
Im not a doctor or other medical professional (although I was years ago). My understanding is that when red blood cells are low it is usually the result of being anemic (not having enough iron in your diet- hemoglobin needs iron to be able to carry oxygen).
While you can always start taking vitamins with iron, if I were you I would find a Hepatologist (a liver specialist) to see. There are lots of other things that can cause anemia besides low dietary iron and I think a hepatologist would probably be more proactive in looking into all the possible causes of your anemia.
Besides, a Hepatologist is the best type of doctor for anyone with PBC.
Take care and good luck.
