Hi. I dont want to be alarmist.. I had a tooth infection whilst in Menorca last summer. Had Doc out got antibiotics, and Ibuprofen. things got worse and at next visit to Doc I was given injections (one each for two days) still taking the original antibiotics. No better so went to Dentist in City.. He changed the antibiotics which I took for a further 5 days - so was on antibiotics for ten days. At the beginning I was taking 6/8 Ibuprofen each day and roliing around with the toothache. I did wonder whether I was doing right thing at the time but of course had to deal with the tooth, which couldn't be taken out because of the infection.

10 days or so after return I felt very unwell long story but ended up hurried into hospital with billirubins through the roof and jaundiced and ill. It may have just been the concoction of everything but .. if you do start to feel unwell after taking the medication don't wait - insist on action/investigation, get bloods read sooner rather than later. I had terrible trouble persuading GP, and blood tests were lost etc... until I could not even sit up straight. It took over a month to get my bloods back to what is normal for me. Also Codeine is a no no for me (Found that out in hospital... ) Anyway all is well now. Just be aware.

Hi Annac

sounds like you had a bad time of it. My pain isn't that bad but been waiting since November for tooth to come out so not surprised got an infection. Hopefully I will be OK on antibiotics as it sounds like you really went through it. Will go GP if i start to feel unwell. Glad to hear your doing OK at the moment.

antibiotics are ok, ibuprofen are not. it would have been the ibuprofen that would have caused the problem with the liver. i too had a lot of problems with my teeth not long after diagnosis december 2010, and ended up having 2 extraction, been on urso since 2010 and have had antibiotics a couple of times with no problems. no more problems with teeth either

Ive taken amoxicillin since having PBC and not had any side effects. I have problems with my lungs and get regular chest infections so have no choice. I agree with wendyh it would be far more likely the ibuprofen that caused the trouble - I cant tolerate them either.

I presume you informed your dentist prior to giving your mouth the once-over that you had PBC and what meds you were on?

I was lucky when I was diagnosed with PBC Dec 2010 as the next check-up at dentist I had I told him I had PBC and he asked what I was on so I told him urso. He put it up on the net at the time and did take an interest.

Every time I have gone since he has asked me if I am still on the urso and also if any other meds (I'm only on urso).

I think you'll find that dentists have a list of meds that they can prescribe patients and amoxcillin seems to be a common one that dentists do prescribe. I've never had a script from a dentist as yet as only ever had the odd tooth extraction and also fillings, no crowns or bridges, etc as yet.

My sister was informed when she was pregnant that she has a heart murmur and every time she has gone to the dentist even to return for a filling, she has been given a script for amoxcillin. She hasn't asked why (she's not as inquisitive as me!).

The last time I ever had amoxcillin was in the yr 2000 and up until 2010 I'd not had any scripts from a doctor since. The only drawback for me was I developed a bout of thrush following so you may have to take that into consideration.

Thanks for all your answers. Peridot - dentist I saw I had been referred to from my normal dentist . Took couple of months to get referral then another to get appointment. Was diagnosed in between this time. Told referral dentist about pbc and he gave me antibiotics but has referred me to local hospital now for treatment. Not yet started taking urso yet as guess still trying to get my head round it all. Thanks for all your help .

Had antibiotics from my dentist many times and I'm fine with them, my dentist knows about the PBC, in fact, he shows more of an interest (as well as researching PBC) than my GP!
