I have to take the above for tooth and sinus problems but it makes my skin itchy and I feel sick - problem is I am allergic to almost every other anti biotic and penicillian for that problem and I need some medicine for it. I dont get bumps or rash but skin itches..is that normal do you think with anitibiotics or is it the PBC? Thanks

Hi, I have just had a dose of erythromycin with no hiccups, Sadly PBC can often cause itching, look on this site and you'll see it is a massvie problem.. You could ring the pharamcist that filled the prescrption, they are usually very knowledgable. Good luck bobbycat.
Thank you. Normally I have no itching at all..I am lucky as have had pbc for 22 years....i think it is just the antibiotic....trouble is face hurting a lot and the tooth a bit less so will have to continue otherwise serious problems with infection. Have written a bit in my blog. Thanks again
Hi, I am allergic to amoxycillin. The last lot of antibiotics I had was for a urine infection from a walk in centre. The doctor said due to my liver condition, I couldn't have any of the normal cheap ones and so she was giving me an expensive one. Maybe need to go back and ask for a different one ... there is usually 3 or 4 different levels for each condition. Ash for a more expensive one, they are usually more pure and less toxic than the cheaper versions that are dished out initially.
Hi, i too am allergic to erythromycin, septrin and penicillin. Its a problem if you have anything serious wrong because it limits the treatments the doctor can get you. I dont suffer with itching with pbc but do with the erythromycin and septrin. Penicillin is worse because my tongue swells up. The allergies came before the pbc diagnosis. Good luck x
Hello bobbycat.
I looked up this drug and one of the 'less serious side-effects' can be itching so could be that you are experiencing this perhaps.
I think if you did have the itch due to PBC like I have (how I was diagnosed 2yrs ago) then I expect you'd not actually think it was this drug and as daft as it sounds, if you did have the itch (I'd not wish on my worst enemy and hope you are one of the lucky ones there and never develop it), then you'd somehow know if it was feeling different.
Urso can actually cause a side-effect, that being itching. I know I have the theory that for us who itch and take urso and it never really goes away but does seem improved as mine is (though still irritating at night), we are at the same time experiencing a side-effect of urso so that's why we continue to itch. Might be wrong but some things just seem to make sense at times given this PBC is rather bizarre.
I've not had any drug except urso since 1999 when I was prescribed amoxycillin for a bout of bad tonsillitis. I then developed thrush no sooner had I reached the final tablet. My late father had taken penicillin when young and as an adult but suddenly when he reached his early 50's he suffered a bad reaction that resulted in a total body coverage of red and itching skin and he was hospitalised for several days. I remember visiting him at dermatology and him mentioning this is what the problem was.
Hi just wanted to let you know that Erythromycin makes me feel like that. Go back and ask for Azithromycin which is much kinder but intrinsically the same (I think)
I took that and refused to take anymore to my Dr. and He said that it is processed through my liver and he gave me something else, It made me so sick, instantly.
Half way through it and I seem to beOK this time. Have terrible TMJ so I actually want to take it in case I have a tooth infection....dr was a bit reluctant but the alternative was even worse for the liver..thanks for your reply.
