when your bloods have been checked and come... - PBC Foundation
when your bloods have been checked and come back elevated what does it mean
Hello ariana.
It can mean anything liver-related. Might be nothing too (ie if you have been taking anything hepatoxic to the liver Ie alcohol for one or medication) that can be resolved if cessation of the cause is achieved.
I originally had elevated LFTs and the initial question from the GP (in 2010. I went with itching) was whether I was drinking on a regular basis. He took more bloods and they came back roughly the same. He then started taking more bloods to rule this and that out and then a few mths later with not much improvement in my symptons (felt heavily fatigued/tired but was working around 48, sometime more hr per wk at the time and also the itch was the same), I went for an ultrasound that showed a relatively normal liver.
Further bloods (one to rule out copper as in Wilson's Disease) and then I saw a consultant who took an antibodies test to diagnose PBC.
The LFTs are now checked at regular intervals to gauge how the urso is contributing. It has improved the LFTs.
Hope this helps and also that it is just a temporary thing for you ariana.
Hi Ariana -
I totally agree with Peridot. At this point it is nothing to get nervous about. - Have your GP explain -in plain language - what they all mean and what you need to do about it. Don't leave until you understand. Also, as I have said on another question, make sure that you get/keep a copy of all your lab work and your appointment records.
Hope this is just a quirk in your bloods, "something you ate or drank" and they go back to normal.-
Keep us informed, ok?? -
Hi,
You say elevated blood levels, but you don;t say what tests they were?
If you have PBC diagnosed, docs often check several things each test, some normal blood counts and blood chemistry as well as a number of different liver function tests.
Each test on its own and collectively gives information to the doctor, and often a one off reading might mean nothing at all.
Doctors usually look at a series of blood tests rather than a one off reading because as others have said, many things can cause a very temporay abnormal reading in certain tests. Even having a cold etc can cause a glitch on a blood test.
It is ok to ask your doctor what they are testing for and why they are testing for those things... we are all partly responsible for our health care and it is ok to ask and keep asking till you understand what is happening.
Try not to worry too much and just call your doctor and ask them to explain the results to you. x
I agree with the girls, elevated bloods are only a sign that something is not quite right and may need further investigation. It can simply be caused by a virus.. Make an appointment with your doctor. It's your body. Good luck. x
