EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS

What ‘sets us off’?

For me the list is long…. What about you? Be honest with yourself now.

What triggers our emotions?

My self image at any given moment, How tired I am, overeating, boredom, people around me, weather, upset plans - maybe because of our fatigue, coworkers, lab results - we worry about what the results will be, doctor visits, social situations, family drama

These can all too often be fairly negative in nature..

What about triggers that are positive for us?

Being w grandchildren, encouraging lab results, getting away, time to yourself, having time to do whatever your hobby is, being w old and dear friends, have someone tell you they ‘love you’ - and mean it, a kind word of encouragement from a stranger on FB or right here from this group.

What triggers your emotions? Make a list.. Again, be honest w yourself. Really think about it.

One for negative triggers…… one for positive triggers.

Think about the word ‘backdraft’.

This refers to the word pain… maybe very old pain… we experience when we give ourselves kindness and compassion. To function in our lives, we have needed to shut out painful or stressful situations in order to protect ourselves. We can do this w our attitude for sure. When something triggers those painful events, we immediately find ourselves shutting down and pulling away from others both physically and mentally - thus, our attitude. Those events are right there in the forefront of our minds at that moment. Often we need to recognize them, knowing the effect they will have on us. We can learn to be ready and start to make changes as to how we respond to those past events. We can begin to control our attitude by knowing what triggers (we talked about before) that attitude to suddenly change for seemingly no reason. If we look deep enough, we can find the ‘why’ behind that attitude.

We can all work on our attitudes when we choose to make a conscious decision to just be aware of the ‘why’ we feel like we do. I admit sometimes we just don’t want to and that’s ok. Being in ‘a mood’ is something we can all relate to - I know I can!
