hi everyone
question is it safe to take hrt with having pbc kind regards Lorraine
this was discussed on one of the Q&A hosted by the PBC Foundation, unfortunately I cannot remember the date of the discussion but I do remember that the answer was it was okay but if I remember correctly there was a preference for the patches.
Professor Jones, OBE is the guest speaker this week if you wanted to you could send in your question for the Thursday Q&A.
best wishes
Ok thankyou I did try patches but it brought my skin up so I'm on tablets why did thay favour the patches x
Sorry Lorraine I do not know but certainly worth asking the questionif you are able to, if you are busy at 1400 hours on Thursday you can always listen in on catch up assuming that you use Facebook. I believe it is handy to email the questions in advance of the day.
That was a nuisance that the patches brought your skin up, pretty sure though tablets are also okay, it has to fall into the category of quality of life, the menopause can be dire for some of us. It is long behind me now but it was not a good time!

My doctor just prescribed a tablet you insert in your vagina at night twice a week. Can't tell you how it is because the pharmacy had to order it and I haven't started yet. There are also vaginal creams. That would eliminate the skin issue with the patch while still being "topical" delivery.
I was told it had to be patches because they are absorbed straight into the skin whereas tablets have to go through your liver and are therefore not suitable if you have PBC.
I had my hysterectomy at 41. My GYN said he would never prescribe the tablets to his patients because they are processed through the liver. I wore the Vivelle Dot patch for years and that was 25 years before I was diagnosed with PBC. They worked well for me. Best I remember, that particular patch is estrogen only. He said when you prescribe estrogen plus progesterone it can pose a problem especially for those who have breast cancer in the family.
Ok interesting I have a chat to my doctor this week thankyou for your reply
On Thursday at 1400 hours UK time if you go to the PBC Foundation's facebook page you can participate live alternatively if you go to the PBC Foundation's link that I have shared here you can join privately.
best wishes

Absolutely, it is safe. I've been on HRT since 1993. I've been on URSO for PBC since 2016. I take both pills in the morning together. There is no drug interaction between the two meds. I've researched it thoroughly, when I started on URSO.
Oh ok that's put my mind at rest could I ask since tacking hrt did it give you back ache in the first couple of weeks I remember that with the paches it did I've just been on tablets for a week and I have back ache again and my womb fills quite stiff to ?
I never used a patch. I was taking Premarin tabs for many years, then switched to generic estrogen, because of the cost of Premarin. Both type of meds worked the same for me and I never had issues with back pain or anything else that I could connect to taking these meds.
I was told that patches doesn’t go through the liver quite the same way as if you ingested hrt. I was unable to use patches because I didn’t stop bleeding and was told there was no alternative. I now use ovestin which is a hormone cream but that is very localised.
Hi I've just started the paches but my back is hurting and my womb is quite stiff to same happened with the paches hot flushes are unbearable it's bad enough putting up with the fatigue x
I too have been taking HRT along with my Urso for years. No issues
I had the patches as tablets altered my blood results
Hi i am 68 and have been on hrt since i was 51 i was diagnosed with pbc 12 years ago and no problems. i also have very very dry eyes and arthritis now in spine and shoulders and knees
My PCP has me on compounded HRT both estrogen and progesterone which are compounded specifically for me. In the US not covered by insurance but not very expensive. She has me on it because, like many PBC patients, my bone density was getting worse. It also won’t go through the liver, these are creams. You have to take 4 hours away from URSO. Anyway works for me and seems to help on the bone density.
