So I don't know how many months ago it was but when my mothers Doctors at the UC was treating my mother they recommended Naltrexone, of course when she took it, she was taking it at 50mg at night. Now prior to this I did not know the people on this forum were taking only very small doses of this medication at 1.5 mg to 3mg. With the 50mg dosage she experienced pain, heart palps and cold sweats, it was like she was on withdrawl of course with pbc we know that is not the case. My question is why did the doctor prescribe such a high dosage? Did they not know any better? Would 1.5-3 mg would've been better? Should I consider bringing it up again, I am just worried she might have the same side effects again even at the most low dosage. Thanks everyone

Hi,
Why the dr gave such a high dose can only be answered by the dr.
I would be interested in why the dr used naltrexone in the first place.
Can I ask if you have joined the Foundation? Have you read our guidance document for care in the USA? It is a lay version of the AASLD guidance.
I am taking it with great results. Started at 4.5mg and now doing 6 mg. Was told to start at 1.5, go to 3 then advance as tolerated.
