Anyone had UTI since diagnosed with PBC, and if so, how did your dr treat it? Which antibiotic?

Don't use Nitrofurantoin (antibiotic) Doctors think that taking this antibiotic might of triggered my PBC.

I'll note that. My dr, whom I trust to the max, gave me Cipro. I took it several years ago but I know too much about it now. I'm calling him this morning. I refuse to take it. Thanks 👍😊

Cipro is one of many in the "quinine " family & they can kill you.

The only drug I've ever had a reaction to is Cipro which was given to me for a UTI long ago. I thought it was going to kill me I was so sick.

Were you on it for a long period of time?

I have seen that comment about Nitrofurantoin (aka Macrobid, Macrodantin) several times on this site. Does anyone have any links to share showing research or findings on this? I'm very curious as I have had it prescribed over the years for UTI.

I'm still deciding to take it or Cipro. Pharmacist said if her, she would take Macrobid. Said Cipro is powerful & more side effects. Macrobid seems to have more from what I'm seeing on drug info. Not sure what to do.

Yes- numerous uti's since diagnosis in 2008. Always treated with antibiotics, macrodantin mostly, which has been the most effective for me.

I usually get one every 3 months or so; treated with Cipro, Amoxicillin or Augmentin and then after antibiotics are done, I take Diflucan

I got really scared when I read about possible liver damage with Cipro. So I just picked up Macrobid. Hope it works

Cipro didn't damage your liver?

I already had PBC and the docs haven't been worried about it.

I stayed with Cipro. Besides if culture comes back that I need stronger than the Macrobid, then I'm a step ahead. Thanks!

Think I'll stick to Cipro. Because it is stronger & covers the bacteria. If Macrobid doesn't kill bacteria, then we start over. 😊

My hepatologist told me that an email had been sent to all Doctors about Nitrofurantoin causing damage to the liver. I was on it for months for a uti and that is when my liver enzymes went through the roof. I think my problem with uti,s was that I was going through the menopause and sadly we dry up. Since I have been put on vagifem I haven't had a uti since.

Sometimes, I just think wether was that a med I took during uti flared up pbc or uti was the early symptom of pbc for me!

This is a little strange to me. I have not had a UTI since way before I was diagnosed. It has been years. Anyway, I always drank cranberry juice of some kind for them. It worked great & I love cranberry grape😉.

Hello! I drink cranberry juice too but that doesn't kill bacterial infection. Sadly☹️😊

I've had 1 uti in probably 5 or 6 yrs. I don't feel it is PBC related but who knows. Thought I had one about 2 yrs ago but tested clear. Was sent to urologist due to trace of blood in ua. He found microscopic stone. No worries. Oh but I did worry. Have known a few people with stones & know it's pure h--- if they try to pass😖. Meanwhile, it's a beautiful sunny day!🌞
