Dear Mysa 1981

I had these varices 5 years ago and vomited over 3 litres of blood which lead to being rushed to hospital and having 4 blood transfusions. The varices were a result of me having primary biliary cirrhosis which was diagnosed 10 years previous. You do not mention if your husband has PBC so my experience of having varices might not be relevant to him.

Yes missed your previous posts. Following having the transfusions I had my varices banded whilst in hospital and had further bandings about 6 months later. This stopped that problem but my liver had worsened with the PBC and 18 months later I had a transplant. So over two years later I am doing well and doing most of the things I use to do.I am 71 yrs of age.

That is my experience with varices but as I'm sure you are aware PBC affects sufferers in different ways and my experience could be well different than your husbands.

Good luck to both of you for the future.

Again I had pbc which led me to having bleeding varices. They banded mine, had banding many times. It's a procedure your gastro will carry out. Common symptom of ppl with pbc. Good wishes to your husband & you x

Hi there, Yes I had a fairly heavy bleed last year ...from both ends! and was in hospital for 6 days...blood transfusion and then IV antibiotics and two other IVs to stop infection and HE...I had three bandings in 3 months and am taking a beta blocker that is often prescribed.... at present the varises have shrunk. I have PBC stage 4

I am 67 and was diagnosed 22 years ago..all was fine until two years ago.

All the best and stay strong
