I use a bit of turmeric in plain white rice. I have read that turmeric is supposed to be good for the liver. I've not taken supplements of it tho'. I have at some point read that an over-indulgence of turmeric could possibly lead to blocking of the bile ducts but I can't now say where I once read that.

I think like a lot of things, things in moderation are by far better. I'm uncertain with regards to turmeric myself but I do take milk thistle.

It's said that a lot of things that we consume are actually with toxins to the system, hence the liver is there. That's why I say foods and drink in a good variation do appear to be better.

We are informed we all should eat '5 a day' but I somehow think that even fruit and veg aren't wholly innocent things. For a start we do not know exactly how they have been grown, stored, etc. I still eat and juice/smoothie them tho'.

I think if we do not over-indulgence on a daily basis then it can't be so bad now with PBC. I can't help wondering if I developed this due to looking after myself so well prior to 2 of the main symptons appearing back in 2010 (fatigue and itching - no longer with fatigue, left me long since, itching I do at night still), that my system decided to turn on itself. If I'd have suffered colds in winter (never did nor do get colds) perhaps my immune system would have been kept busily occupied but how am I to know. I find PBC a very strange thing indeed.

Thanks for your input....I find this a very mysterious disease for sure. I guess all things in moderation as you said. Thanks : )

Hiya,

I add turmeric to my cooking almost everyday as I mainly cook spicy food which thankfully doesn't interfere with my reflux. It is a spice that naturally colours your food yellow and adds a flavour that I can't describe, it's not hot like chilli or herby. It is only suited to some foods but I too have read that it is good for you.

When I was younger, if I had a cough my mum used to make me have the turmeric powder mixed with sugar (yum), half teaspoon turmeric powder (aka Haldi) to 1 teaspoon of sugar and just eat it. Do not drink any liquids immediately after.

I spoke to my consultant at Leeds and mentioned about various herbal treatments that are supposed to heal 'Jaundice' but as there is no scientific evidence, its suggested that we don't use alternative herbalistic things as they could easily interfere with our Pbc medication and could cause a contraindications. I have read that the following are said to improve Liver function, things such as:-

Orange juice

Sugar cane juice

fresh fruit juices

1 tea crushed papaya seeds extract its juice,

+ 2 tbl lemon juice mix and drink twice a day/month

1 glass buttermilk 1 t jeera pwder drink twice daily

glass water. 1/22 lemon sqeeze + 1 t salt - 3 x day

carrot + spinach juice

Beets

grapefruit green Tea

leafy greens raw cook or juice

avocados

apples

olive oil hempseed flaxseed oil

whole grains - brown rice

conciferous vegetables - ie brocolli/cauli

lemon + limes fresh juice

walnuts

cabbage

haldi (Turmeric powder)

oranges kale asparagus brussel sprouts

I agree with the statement "Everything in moderation!", but there's no harm in eating any of the above.
