I have very recently been Diagnosed as having PA. I am going to have 3 monthly injections, but realise I may have to request more frequency with he injections if needed.

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with PA myself I have the course of 6 injections 1 every other day for two weeks that was 8 weeks ago, I did ask my Dr if the oral form was ok but he said that he had had no good feedback on the oral form and said that the injections are better as they go straight into the blood stream whereas the oral takes longer to get into the blood stream, the injections do hurt a bit as they put them straight into the muscle in your arm and hopefully you should stary to feel better. You shouldn't need a top up the injections should be enough.

I hope this helps and you feel better soon

Not every one can last 3 months inbetween injections. It depends upon your symptoms and as you have only been diagnosed you won't know yet if you will need more regular treatment. Has your folate been checked? In order for B12 to work you need a good supply of folate, most people need it to be in the top end of the range to feel the benefit of injections.

Normally, people that have been diagnosed with PA are not able to absorb supplements through their stomach. You lack the parietal cells and intrinsic factor to be able to do this (vital for absorption ) this is why you get injections, to bypass the stomach.

Have a look at pernicious-anaemia-society.org. You will get lots of good information on there.

If you can get it the active B12 test seems to be the best.
