I started using the term self-treating as soon as I started to inject. In the USA I was prescribed 8 weekly cyno 1mg IM then 1mg cyno and 1 mg folic oral daily for life. No further treatment necessary. I did improve but not much. My impetus to self-treat was at first driven to prevent permanent damage.
I followed the British National Formulary guidelines for 1 year and 4 months and did gradually improve. I came to understand that I was experiencing using up my B12 which was confirmed by those on this forum. Thank you for that.
I now think in terms of self-treating starting when I increased to hydroxocobalamin .5 mg three times a day.
I also read about B6 deficiency which is rarely diagnosed and determined if it was the cause of my peripheral neuropathy it would not be diagnosed and started treating with injections and experienced instant improvement. Some on this forum helped me come to the conclusion that Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate was the form to use and have established the oral dosage my body needs. The tests for B6 are not adequate and when it DX it is most often done clinically/by symptoms.
Whenever I read clinically I hear unlikely.
All the trials I have done are not on a whim just because it is contrary to the standard guidelines. Critical thinking is hard.

I started with some other form than Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate with injections. There are issues with taking large amounts of other forms 500mg/per day for a year in that it causes peripheral neuropathy that goes away if the supplementation is stopped.
I switched to oral Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate when I could not find Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate to inject.
When I take oral I do not experience peripheral neurotrophy. I have stopped taking it 4 times now and the peripheral neuropathy comes back in 3 to 5 days and goes away within 3 days when I resume supplementation.
The science is strong it is not often applied or accepted. The test for B6 much like the testing for B12 can not be relied on and a trial is most often done.
The science is strong it is not often applied. It does seem the science is not accepted by those that self treat or the medical field. It seems often to be viewed only as a cofactor to B12 which it is sometimes is its own deficiency and not separate for anyone.
