The gut microbiome supports all aspects of health. It may take some time to rebuild after the carpet bombing of an antibiotic :( Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. I was a bit shocked to read that there has been a fatality from using this antibiotic. I'm keeping up with EOD injection. 🤞

It was 17 days of this drug for a post surgical infection (and I also found out I’d been given nitrous oxide during the surgery) that preceded the loss of mobility in my legs. Previously when I’d only been given a standard three day course for UTI my feet would go numb for about two weeks. It oxidises b12 in the body so it doesn’t work.

It's not that. It's because the nerves are hypersensitive when damaged. They're sensitized and react to many chemicals, antibiotics especially. I figured how to prevent this after one year of trying everything (I thought). Read the thread I just posted. =)

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one! Nitrofuratonin affects B12 and Trimithoprem affects folate.

Hi 3rdNettydoon,

I am very sorry to read that you are still poorly and require antibiotics. Yes you are correct that Nitrofurantoin is to be prescribed with caution to those with P.A./B12 deficiency. Doctors may not be aware.

However, because it is 7 weeks after, (I can see you are in the U.K.), please report on The Yellow Card Scheme. It is the government’s medication regulatory body.

yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

Please click on the box for a copy to be sent to your G.P.

You may also wish to write a quick ‘letter’ to the ‘Prescribing Clerk’ at your G.P. surgery:-

Dear (find out name from website),

Re: The Prescribing of Nitrofurantoin with Pernicious Anaemia/vitamin B12 deficiency.

On (date), Dr (whatever) prescribed the antibiotic Nitrofurantoin (dose) for (however many) days for (whatever was wrong with you). Please be aware that according to the British National Formulary (2023), this antibiotic is to be prescribed with caution to those with Pernicious Anaemia/vitamin B12.

However, since (date) I have been experiencing (briefly name your symptoms) and I still continue. The moderate and extended reaction impacts my daily living activities (give 2 examples, such as it takes me 1 hour to shower). Therefore, I have reported my adverse reactions on the Government’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, The Yellow Card Scheme.

I would be extremely grateful that you many discuss my concerns with all General Practitioners and prescribing clinicians within the practice. I am very aware that my case is not in isolation. Please ensure that all prescribing practitioners are practicing ‘safe prescribing’ as per the General Medical Council and Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Thanking you in advance,

Kind regards,

3rdNettydoon.

bcc:

Please put in bold the blind cc because they have no idea who you are and where you are sending or not sending the other copy.

For information, twice I was prescribed this drug, let’s just say I was rather unimpressed.

I've been taking it regularly and was on it everyday for 2 years! I have PA , low-folate and have B12 injections every 3 months. Never had any issues. I suffer a lot with cystitis so have to take it often.
