I'm in Ontario and my doc ordered me a serum folate test. If you're familiar with Dynacare, the test is listed on their website. If your doc is refusing you can order a requisition at blue horizon and take it to any lab.

in strict bio-chemical terms folate isn't a co-factor.

It is used as well in a lot of the processes that need B12 to run, ie they won't run if there isn't folate present either.

Folate absorption happens in the terminal ileum so there is a very high probability that if you have a B12 absorption problem you will also have a folate absorption problem.

unless you are definitely deficient avoid doses over over 1000mcg/day as these can cause problems - trapping B12 in the wrong form for some processes to run properly.

What helpful information Gambit, thank you.

Also Gambit62 , is the terminal ileum an area that is accessible by an upper endoscopy or colonoscopy? I remember fbirder mentioning their was one part of that system that is not accessible by either, but I can not remember which part.
