Is anyone here taking PPI’s long term, and if so at what frequency do you SI?
I’m a gastric bypass patient so my PA is man made not autoimmune and I take omeprazole daily.
I’ve been SI for a month now and although the results have been amazing, I’m not where I want to be and wonder if I need to continue at a high frequency because of the effects of PPI’s.
Thanks x

it is more accurate to call your condition “B12 deficiency”, not non-autoimmune Pernicious Anaemia. If you have to take P.P.Is , then you need to inject B12 as often as required to keep any B12 deficiency symptoms at bay . Do not worry how often this is , as you CANNOT overdose on B12 , which is a huge advantage . But having low or no stomach acid ( Hypochlorhydria/ Achlorhydria ) can lead to imperfect absorption of other vitamins and minerals . So it maybe good to take a vitamin and mineral supplement . Vitamin B9 ( called folic acid in tablet form and folate in fruit and vegetables ) works together with B12 so pay particular attention to getting enough It’s found abundantly in green leafy vegetables . You can’t overdose on it in food but you can in tablet form .
Do chew your food well , as absorption starts with the enzymes in saliva . All probiotic foods are good for low stomach acid patients — Sauerkraut , kimchi , real unflavoured yoghurt , kefir etc They help keep stomach flora balanced , which can be upset by lack of stomach acid caused by PPIs
So to recap .. Can’t say how often you should inject B12 . We are all different . You need to inject often as necessary to keep any B12 deficiency symptoms at bay , and not to worry how often that is . . Best wishes .
P.S. I know that some doctors might say that too much B12 is toxic , ( mine did) but this totally untrue . If a doctor ever says that to you , ask to be pointed to scientific evidence . They cannot , because there is no such evidence .But there is scientific evidence to show that B12 cannot be overdosed . I haven’t got the reference , but it is somewhere in the PAS information .
Please note being on PPIs won't affect the frequency with which you need to inject - PPIs affect absorption through the stomach - which obviously isn't happening in your case as you have a B12 absorption problem because of the gastric by-pass.Some of the impacts of B12 deficiency take longer to resolve than others. Guidelines if treating neurological issues are to continue with every other day until symptoms stop improving - If the neurological issues have plateaued then try dropping the frequency of injections and keep a diary of symptoms and do another injection when the symptoms start to return.
