Angry After B12 Supplements. Why?

HopeandWellness profile image
20 Replies

Hi-

I take methyl-B12 sublingually every day. If I take 3,000 a day, I either feel very angry or depressed (zoned out). If I only take 1,000, I'm not sure that's enough. I don't have access to the shots because I live in a rural part of the US.

1) Does anyone else feel almost more anxious/angry/and/or depressed after sublingual B12?

2) How long does it take for the nerve pain in your feet to go away?

Feeling Hopeless--Thank You!!!

Yes, that's a side-effect of methylcobalamin that is often reported. Switch to cyanocobalamin.

Hi there. I use sublingual methyl-B12. However if you have PA oral B12 supplements can only be absorbed passively and only about 1% of the B12 supplement will make it into the blood. The process is basically osmosis. So you need to take lots. The body can only efficiently absorb a small amount of B12 within a given period of time. In order to help B12 absorption it is recommended that you divide the dose over the course of the day. So I am diluting the drops with water and drinking it regularly throughout the day. Since doing this my recovery has been remarkable. Maybe you should try my protocol for a few days before buying another type of B12 supplement.

And you can feel worse before you feel better. A lot of forum members mention it.

Some people react that way to methylcobalamin, myself included. I feel on edge with it.

I can even tell a difference in my sister's voice and patience level when she is taking methylcobalamin (between cyanocobalamin shots or when they have been denied during Covid). It is that evident.

Others have no adverse effects whatsoever.

As for the nerve pain, hang in there. It can take a bit. I had severe nerve pain for years before getting diagnosed. So bad I thought nothing could be worse. Could not function, it was that bad.

I was wrong. There was worse.

At some time during loading doses of shots I had an 18 hour situation where I had to literally walk around my condo for 18 hours. I could not even sit or lay down. It was like someone was zapping me every twenty minutes. It was a horror show, quite honestly.

It came back once after that, and then has never returned. I believe that time was my nerves firing back up and healing.

Some symptoms can get worse before they get better.

You can get b12 delivered to your home.

I am so very sorry that you are suffering right now.

Hi, I'm here in the US. Stop taking methyl B12 supplements. Buy the regular type of B12. Methyl made me feel incredibly anxious and gave me horrible insomnia. You'll feel better as soon as you stop taking it.

You say you live in rural US. I understand that doctors are sometimes hard to find in rural areas. If you can get an appointment with a GP, and because you live far away from medical facilities, you could probably get him/her to give you a prescription for B12 for self injecting. The nurse can show you how to do it and you can take your prescription to any pharmacy to have it filled. The pharmacist will give you the necessary syringes and needles. If you have insurance the cost if very minimal.

Be sure you know which size syringe to ask for. I tried doing it myself one time, i just couldn’t do it, but, my friend said the syringe was too big. If the pharmacy is too far away, the doctor can write the prescription to dispense more than 1 at a time. My prescription is written for 2 per month, so the pharmacy will give me 2 vials and two syringes at a time if I actually fill the prescription.

Also, do you have a cvs near you? Some cvs have minute clinics inside them. I

get my injections there. They provide the b12, syringe, and do the injection for $35 before insurance.

I took sublingual methyl 3-5,000 units per day after two monthly injections and then stopping them. I became obsessed with the notion that it was the type of b12 I was taking that was causing very negative reactions, I tried to vary the dosage and change the form, but just continued on a downward spiral.

The problem was that I couldn’t absorb sublingual B12 and needed injections. It finally dawned on me that it could be that but by that time, I was in such bad shape, I had a hard time driving to my doctor’s appointment. Began weekly injections and eventually learned to self inject for convenience. Talk to your doctor about self-injection. B12 is available at US pharmacies and through mail order pharmacies if you have that option through insurance.? After covid hit, I don’t know how many times I said that I was so glad I learned to self-inject as I had no lapse in treatment. Good luck!

Great info!! Thank you!!!

I didn't get angry but I did feel aweful. Leg pains and like I could feel the blood in my legs aches in my bones and fluey and tired. But I then stopped and some symptoms came back. I dropped the dose and now I have only a small buzzing sensation and the tinnitus is going away I think... Its early days yet... Me nerves feel worse...my teeth nerves especially and had a shooting pain through my nerves in my leg and my back... I don't know exactly what's going on but I'm going to stick with it and see. It seems things can get worse before they get better. But I dare not take the larger dose and feel it so much as before. I also taking a b complex and that seems fine. I took some other b vitamins at a high dose and had so much pains from them. Thiamine niacin and b3 that was just too much. Sharp stabbing pains all over that felt cold and horrid. So the b complex seems milder and they are all needed together. And I'm taking magnesium for my heart and vitamin c d and k as well. So its hsrd to say what's causing what. I don't feel worse anyway. But the large doses of any of the b vitamins on their own made me fele awful. I don't have pa that I know of and suspect it is deficiency. As far as I know anyway.

The most profound moment of depression I've ever felt was when I bought bulk powdered methl b12 and then swallowed handfuls of it in the hopes of getting some results.

I would liken it to being like a religious experience. Such overwhelming sadness while my mind was fully aware of what my body was feeling.

I feel much, much better with hydroxocobalamin. I don't know why my body reacts so much better to this. And it gives me better results, too.

That goes for both injections, powders, and pill supplements. I tried all of them and Hydro always wins.

Did you ever check into a thiamine deficiency as a cause for the nerve pain in your feet? B vitamins in general are important for nerves and B1 for the microvasculature.

Did any of you have problems with hip bursitis? It’s almost like I can’t go for a walk after I take the B12 because it sets off the tingling (effervescent bubbles) feeling in my feet and legs and I wonder if that’s making my hip tighter. It’s maddening trying to figure all of this out.
