Sleep Paralysis??

Hi I have suddenly started to experience this, it's happened 3 times this year (twice last night) where I wake in the middle of the night not able to move but feel there is someone else in the room or bed with me. I am totally paralysed & can't shout out either which is really frightening at the time. I also suffer regularly with lucid/vivid dreams & nightmares and slept walked as a child. I just wondered why now at the age of 55 I've started to experience this. All the google searches suggest it's lack of sleep, or erratic sleep pattern, neither of which apply. It also suggests could be PTSD or anxiety again not applicable in my case. I just wondered if other members have experienced this? I have PA (diagnosed 21 years ago - Consultant Gastro.) and am on 8 weekly shots but can't work out yet if there's a pattern in between the shots. I am mid way through them & yes towards the 8 week due date I wake often with numbness & tingling in my hands particularly. Last night's experience was awful as I had clearly fallen asleep with my hands clasped so when I woke with this paralysis I was desperately trying to prise them apart but couldn't!! Any suggestions on what/why this is happening welcome :)

The more you read about other peoples experiences the more you realise how different we all are.As a child I would sleepwalk, comedown stairs and would be watching the test card on BBC (only the older generation would know about the testcard

😜) My brother would come in from a night out and carry me to bed. Many a time I would go walking and then go back to bed, but not my own, ended up in my brothers bed, and on holiday in my nephews bed.I remember when first diagnosed, after one injection I woke and felt completely paralysed , I just stared at the ceiling felt very frightened . After several minutes I was able to move. AS for my hands I wear my splints when I'm

Getting pins and needles numbness.

Pleasure it worked for me.Let me know how you get on.Hopefully it won’t happen again.

I have this, but was told it’s due to my narcolepsy with cataplexy. I also scream bloody murder in my sleep. That was always fun to explain to any kids that would sleep over with my kids, warning them so they don’t flip out. Or waking up to hear my phone ringing, but unable to answer it, hearing my husband tel me my phone is ringing, then him realizing I can’t move.

oh my goodness I can't imagine how my boys would have reacted to that! Suppose I should be glad that only started experiencing this now they've all grown up & left home. It really is a horrible experience though & not sure how darling hubby (divorced now) would have handled it.🤪

You poor thing, I’ve suffered sp all my life, after an attic I would lay in bed gasping for air it was awful. My husband at the time said I would be making low groaning sounds like I was trying to scream and he’d wake me up. When my marriage broke up I had no one to wake me up if it happened and I spent years searching for help and answers all to no avail. Then I became a Christian and started to pray every single night for Gods protection from this awful thing that was masking my life with fear. The sp didn’t go away at once but became less and less (about every few months instead of weekly) now I can tell you with delight I am Now completely Free from theses sp it’s been life changing I really believe if they kept up I would have died of a heart attack. I wish you well sweetheart and all I can tell you is prayer worked for me x

Just thought I’d post this as hopefully it will relieve your concern.

We covered sleep paralysis at university and, whilst I haven’t experienced it myself, I do know people who have experienced it. I know it can be really alarming.

hi Maggie0652 thank you for posting the link it's the only article I've read on this that mentions night leg cramps which I also suffer from (have done since a child) & interestingly just before the latest episode my legs have been hurting more than usual at night & keeping me awake so funny that it's linked. I have already made some adjustments to my sleeping habits, putting pillows behind me to stop me rolling onto my back & avoiding all the usual stuff, phones, caffeine etc. so hoping that I won't experience any more of these as you say really alarming experiences. Was also good to read in the article that very rarely is sleep paralysis linked to a physcological condition as some other sites have stated this could be a cause. Thank you for taking the time to post 😊
