my first test came back positive for gastric parietal cell antibodies using the Elisa test.
Second test tests 5 years later for parietal cell antibody titers, comes back negative.
Ok is this something that comes and goes?

It seems the intrinsic factor antibody test is used more now to try and get a PA diagnosis. The parietal cell antibody test can be positive for other autoimmune diseases as well . Addisons ,type 1 diabetes thyroid ect . So good in that respect as an indicator to carry on investigating. Very frustrating for you to have s positive then negative.
I only know it tests whats there at the time of blood test
Why was it repeated?
Both these tests can give false positives and negatives it seems
But true /correct if any antibodies present at time of test .
I hate inconclusive tests.
Also the results can be 'used against you ' with b12 deficiency or PA. For no or inadequate treatment.
I was only given the parietal cell antibody test once.
It was negative . But very low first ever b12 serum
I presently need b12 injections every 6 days ??
Prescribed 2 weekly . Going by symptoms and response to injections and low b12 initially found
Nothing else found to treat.
I think it's good to know the cause .
Not sure if i ever will though.
It's a cases of elimination.
Clinical judgement.
Response to treatment.
Some people have a few tests and the results are not the same each time .
I would find that confusing ..which one do you believe to be correct ??
I'm sure you will get a more scientific answer
So much more needs to be known.
All tests have their limitations - one of the problems with GPCA testing is that it tends to give false positives quite often - Testing involves processes that identify the substances in your blood using their mass (like weight). This means that if there are substances with similar mass then the test can't distinguish. For this reason the test results are adjusted for likely confusion, but the chosen level doesn't rule out the possibility that the chemical being detected is the wrong one.
