Ugh now diabetes

Hi again.

I have now been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have been put on insulin injections plus Metaformin at night. I am not over weight and have never had any sign of diabetes before suddenly taking seriously ill and being admitted to hospital.

I know that Metaformin depletes Vitamin B levels but Diabetes doctor says I should be ok as long as I’m getting my injections.

Up until I took ill I was self injecting every other day, now I don’t know what to do. My gp is giving me my prescribed one on Monday however I only get that every 3 months and it isn’t enough.

Is it safe to continue self injecting? My blood sugar levels are all over the place and as yet they can’t get them to stabilise.

Any advice appreciated.

Continue self injecting — you cannot overdose on Vitamin B12 , and make sure that you are getting plenty of folate in green leafy veg or folic acid tablet ( 400mcg is fine) Get that book by Dr Michael Mosely —. The 8 week blood sugar diet ( Amazon £6.99) Best wishes .

I agree with wedgewood , def' get a copy of Michael Moseley's 8 Week Blood Sugar book. Also I highly recommend Dr David Unwin , a GP from Southport, who is a HUGE figure in the type 2 diabeties fight and has helped many of his patients reverse theirs thru diet. He has been so successful in getting people off medication that he actually refunds the NHS money saved.

Google him and you'll find lots of really useful, eye opening information.

I wish you well x

Your doc is correct - metformin will interfere with B12 absorption, so you'll be OK as you have injections.

Thanks fbirder, I’m not sure about the frequency of the injections. I guess I’m afraid of it causing complications with the insulin. My gp knows nothing about pernicious anemia even though she was the one that finally diagnosed it..so she is no help whatsoever. I mentioned the Metaformin to her and she didn’t reply.

I know of no interaction between B12 and insulin. Quite a few Type 1 diabetics will also have PA - both being autoimmune diseases.

yes, keep up with injections,my blood sugars are the same-anything from late teens through to 30 plus mmol/L ,all over the place and I SI every other day too ,not having insulin yet though, starting liquid metformin this evening when I pick it up from chemist

Good luck with the Metaformin. Hopefully you can reverse it and you never need insulin.

I'm on Metformin, was prescribed it 6 years ago, I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I've never been overweight either. I inject once a week with B12. The only way I've found to keep all these things under control is exercise - I run and walk a lot and keep to a strict healthy diet. Very unsettling when you first find out I know. Sending good wishes to you.

I know that Diabetes Type 1 is an autoimmune disease, but I saw in a video recently that Type 2 is now also classified as autoimmune - can anyone verify that?
