Is there a PA & Diabetes relationship

I follow a healthy diet as have PA, under active thyroid, and high cholesterol. My bloods now show I am heading towards diabetes I follow a good excercise regime until I broke my foot in May and also have a frozen shoulder to sort out. I'm just wondering is it my drop in excercise (walking weekly 5k, yoga, dancing) or is it related to PA.

Presumably you are talking about type 2 diabetes -

I am not aware of any established relationship between PA and type 2 diabetes.

Ketoacidosis is a rarer symptom of B12 deficiency - due to involvement of B12 in the Krebs cycle - which is the cycle your cells use to release energy from sugars. Its a more common symptom of poorly controlled diabetes - so not quite relevant.

Not aware of anything that would cause hbA1c to be raised in patients with PA - though cholesterol can be raised in patients who are B12 deficient.

More likely to be the drop in exercise regime - or the hypothyroidism ... as both hypothyroidism and diabetes are diseases of the endocrine system.

article implies that the order of development is type 2 diabetes then hypothyroidism but I haven't looked in detail at associated references.

Thank you Gambit62 not sure re what type but that's a relief not connected to PA. initially when diagnosed with PA & asked my GP what long term of PA is ? Said you don't want to know. Left me feeling worse hence I found here which is so informative. Knowledge is power and enables one to be proactive rather than reactive. My thyroid is staying ok with eltroxin but interesting that related to diabetes. Good to know.

I will get my excercise regime back and focus on reducing my carbs & sugar even more . I need to loose 14lbs to get back to minimum weight, so won't go astray either.

Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated.

sounds as if your GP really doesn't know much at all about B12 - yes PA was a fatal degenerative disease in the past but that was before they had even identified that B12 was the critical factor. Injectable B12 is cheap and simple and very effective - the only thing is the complications of getting GPs to recognise that treatment needs to be based on symptoms not a rather dubious blood test.

Good luck with the carbs and weight and reversing the pre-diabetes

Gambit62 GP diagnosed me in Aprox 2012 I got B12 I think every 2 weeks over 6 weeks then ever 3 months. I was doing great. Last year it wasn't working for me as good so GP changed me to Cyanocobalmamin b12 1000mcg every 3weeks that's much better. Said to follow my body not the calendar so good that way. GP is good just not into sharing test results in detail need to know basis which frustrates me. I'm booked in for a full medical screening in September so going to get actual results myself so I can see the full picture with so much going on.

Ive also had 3.7 rough years of hot flushes and othet menopause symptoms but survived with help of herbalist she was a life saver.

Sure never a dull moment but could be worse....

Thanks again

Sounds as if you could be under-treated for your thyroid as you have raised cholesterol. Do you have your T3 tested in addition to the TSH & FT4 ? On the NHS website it mentions treating the thyroid before starting statins ..

There is also well documented info on frozen shoulder and low thyroid .

How is your VitD level ? ( broken foot ? ) Often low when Hypo 😊

Hi Marz I know I'm tested for thyroid but no idea specifically for what and result. Im on Eltroxin 50mg . I think I started it before the Lipitor as I hated the idea of going on it I must check that out.

I'm going for a medical screening separate to my GP in September so I will ask for the T3 also. Since menopause I started taking Vit D probably a good year test done & was told ok ( what ever that means) . I was jogging and went off foot path, turned it broke & fx 5th metatarsal. Interesting Vit D and thyroid connection also the frozen shoulder and thyroid. I will research that thanks. So much to figure out (PA, thyroid, cholesterol, menopause, frozen shoulder & broken 5th metatarsal, threatened diabetes)hence I'm going for a complete medical screening in September to be sure and get medical results so I can see the whole picture. I haven't missed a day from work but feeling a bit battered/shattered.

I just need a new body 😉

Thanks for your info much appreciated.

You are legally entitled to have copies of your results with ranges - so you are able to monitor your progress and check what has been missed ! 50 mcg is a starter dose and I am wondering how long you have been taking this. So the Levo/T4 you are taking is a storage hormone and does very little in the body - it needs to convert into the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3 - which is needed in every cell of the body. It is the LOW in range T3 that causes the symptoms you are experiencing. So the tests you need are TSH - FT4 - FT3 and to rule out Hashimotos the Anti-bodies TPO & Tg should be tested.

I would suggest Private Testing through Thyroid UK - see link below - Click onto About Testing and the companies that send out Home Testing kits will appear ...

thyroiduk.org

Conversion of T4 into T3 takes place well when levels of B12 - Folate - Ferritin and VitD are optimal. Often low when hypo due to absorption issues.

I have been a member of the Thyroid UK Forum here on HU - for almost 8 years and where I have learnt so much from the well informed members there. Come and join us - many of us are members of both. You can click onto my Username above and quickly read my Bio. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos at 59 after a lifetime of health issues. I am almost 73 and doing well !

How much VitD are you taking ? Dosage should be based on the result - and of course re-testing is important to check how things are. Co-factors Magnesium and VitK2-MK7 are also needed ...

You do not need a new body - just need to know more about the one you have :-)
