My sister has high b12 but low folate??

So over the past few weeks my sister has high b12 she was taking multi bits for 2 weeks. She stopped taking them had bloods taken again which showed it lowered but still high. Now it’s gone up again but she has low folate. Her gp is referring her to other places I don’t know where but can anyone explain this. All other test are normal. 🥴 obviously reading online it brings up lots of scary things but surely doing bloods would all rule out other things.

The most likely explanation is a lack of folate in the diet. She needs to eat more folate-containing foods. Green, leafy veg, nuts, seeds and pulses are good.

Probably a good idea to take a supplement of folic acid, 400 mcg a day, as well.

Ok thank you, so the multi vitamins must have put her folate at a good level on her first blood test then after stopping the vits her b12 went down a little. Then on 3rd one her b12 was up with low folate. So the low folate can be explain high b12?

one of sleepybunny's links to a pdf by a Pat Kornic suggests that low folate can cause a false high serum b12 reading, click on her name ,it was a recent post

I read recently that blood serum tests for B12 deficiency are not much use but that they are more accurate in detecting a couple of other disorders if the levels come back high.

Oh ok thanks, yes she was worried too be cause she has a lump under arm. Which is taking ages to be seen too by a specialist. But I’m sure will be ok considering all blood tests are ok apart from this thing. Looking online make it look very scary and very rare to have it, when it’s not when you look on this forum x
