The procedure itself is unpleasant, although not painful. You will be offered sedation or an anaesthetic spray for the back of your throat. I've always opted for the spray. The worst bit is when they first insert the tube. The more relaxed you can be during this stage the better it will be. It really is difficult, but it helps if you've ever learned meditation.
Once they are in there, you don't have to do anything by wait.
I won't discuss what your symptoms may mean, as that's the job of the gastroenterologist. They should have a quick chat with you to discuss what they have found as soon as they've checked the photos they've taken and you have recovered.
I think I've had four endoscopy's since being diagnosed in 2001 - at first I was very worried about having something rammed down my throat, but it wasn't that bad. For the latest one I does off half way through - meditation (and xanax) is a great way to go.
Yes, on my third I was lying there when somebody entered the room and started complaining to the gasto about another member of staff. Gastro had to stop her, saying "I don't think we should be discussing this in front of other staff. And the patient isn't sedated". I was doing a great impersonation of being asleep.
Have the sedation. After that you're so relaxed it's fine. I can only remember snatches of the procedure because I was only half awake. I wouldn't be so stressed about it if I had to have another one. Good luck.
I wanted to watch it on the TV. It was fascinating. After my second one they redesigned the suite so the patients couldn’t see what was happening. Swiz!
I have so many of these symptoms. The rib pain and breast under arm one is really bugging me the most. I also have daily headaches, back pain, weight loss, feeling of fullness in esophagus. I had an endoscopy last week for the first time. It wasn’t bad at all. They gave me meds to make me super sleepy that I didn’t even realize what was going on. It came back that I had some inflammation in my stomach. It has gotten better but the fullness feeling/heartburn in my esophagus is really bothering me. Let me know what you find out. Hang in there!
I had similar symptoms, an endoscopy, nothing but mild inflammation. It turns out it was a pulled muscle near my spine which was messing with all my nerves and making me feel the pain was in my stomach rather than in my back. Took me a year of worry and feeling like a hypochondriac to figure that out!
Don't worry its unpleasant but not that bad. With a skilled doctor it can be as quick as a few minutes.
I had an endoscopy recently and made the mistake of not asking for the spray. Also it was in another country they had some old equipment the hose was huge. In the UK the hoses look tiny much more modern equipment. Its a blessing.
So i had my endoscopy and colonoscopy done last month and the result came back positive with HPYLORI. My doctor put me on a two weeks course
of antibiotics. I finished my course but i still feel burning sensation in my stomach, feeling bloated, hair loss and face itch. any suggestions of what to take to treat the HPylori?

Hi, as soon s I read your 1st post I thought H Pylori. I know all the symptoms and have just been treated for the 2nd time in 15yrs. Give it a few weeks to let things settle down after the treatment. Hope you feel better soon
Thank you so much. I knew it was that before i got tested by searching on the internet with my symptoms. I'm waiting patiently for my symptoms to go down in time but there's times they're still unbearable.
I know it took a few weeks for mine to settle it's awful. I had an Endoscopy in UK it wasn't picked up. 2 yrs later it was picked up by a test in UAE. Hope you feel good soon.
