Weight gain
Once I started B12 injections I didn’t have a surge of energy. However, after a year or two of injections starting with every 2 months (I wasn’t offered loading doses), then monthly and finally weekly my energy levels came up to near normal. I think the important thing for me was finding the injection frequency that suits me.
Prior to diagnosis I had a few gastric issues: feeling very uncomfortable and over full after eating, bloating and constipation. Consequently I ate less and lost a few pounds.
Once diagnosed as well as the B12 injections and recommended supplements, I started using a good quality probiotic which gave a huge improvement to the bloating and constipation. Using betaine hcl and pepsin with meals also helps (others use lime juice) as does eating lighter meals such as poached eggs rather than heavier meat dishes.
I was then able to eat better so I put on a few pounds so that my weight returned to normal.
At its worst, the bloating increased me by a full dress size; however, it was abdominal bloating only. It was not my whole body as suggested in your post. If you’re bloated in areas other than your abdomen I wonder if this requires separate investigation?
Hi Jan thanks for replying main bloating is in my abdomen too .Going to make an appointment with dr to discuss .,not due s jab for another month but feeling lightheaded and lethargic .What probiotic do you use ? Regards Isy
Hi. I used a 3 month course of Symprove. It’s expensive but buying direct from them you get the third month free. I’ve used other probiotics too but Symprove was the only one that made a very noticeable difference. Every now and again, maybe once or twice a year, I feel the need to use it for a month to keep things working.
Other people have had success using sauerkraut. I haven’t tried this but I do try to include lots of prebiotic foods in my diet. That’s basically high fibre veg which also keeps up my folate intake.
I gained a lot of weight as well. It was like being inflated. Areas I never put weight on before - belly, arms, breasts, cheeks. I think it may have something to do with under active thyroid (I am not clinically hypothyroid though) and maybe adrenal fatigue which I understand might be a bit far fetched in the eyes of traditional medicine as a condition but seems to apply to me.
From what I understand most people lose weight when they are b12 deficient. My doctor kept telling me there was no way I was having b12d symptoms because I was putting on weight not losing it... not sure about that assessment but thought I would mention it. I clearly was b12d but weight loss seems to be more common. I guess we’re just lucky
I am going by my experience not a diagnosis so please take what I say as one voice among many!! Or with a grain of salt. Whichever you prefer
I hope I can lose this puffiness and I hope you can too - it is darned uncomfortable.
Take care and good luck.
