Methylcobalamin Side-Effects?

Hello! Just a quick question that I would really appreciate any clarification to. A week ago I started taking the Solgar methylcobalamin sublinguals 1000ug - at first I was feeling that they were a miracle! All my symptoms started to decrease considerably. However, a few days ago I started feeling dreadful nausea, anxiety and lack of appetite, and then had an episode of bloating and eventually vomited in the evening twice. My anxiety is now at an extremely high level. I haven't read that much about Methyl side effects so I was wondering if this was causing my gastro and anxiety symptoms/anyone experienced something similar? (Seems an odd coincidence if not) Also, if you could point me in the direction of any reliable Hydrox sublinguals I would really appreciate that. Thank you so much for your input.

Hi AnnaR10 it could be something in the make up of the tablets - you might try cyanocobamalin sublinguals and also check your Folate level.

You could also have a word with your pharmacist.

I'm not a medically trained person but wish you well.

some people don't respond well to methyl but that generally manifests very quickly - 24 hours. Anxiety is one of the symptoms that tends to get quite bad.

However, con-incidences do also happen. Presume you have stopped using the sublinguals to see what difference that makes.

detoxpeople do a wide range of B12 products which includes hydroxo sublinguals.

Thank you so much for getting in touch, fairly convinced it has been the tablets - nausea and subtle anxiety had manifested itself within 36 hours, stopped taking them a couple of days ago and definitely noticing the mental improvement. Just while I have you here, wondering your thoughts RE the notion (forgive me if I'm not quite hitting the nail head on here but I am sure you know what I am trying to get at) that after being deficient for sometime the methyl cycle 'fires up' as it were when you start taking supplements - and these symptoms are a natural part of the healing process. Just wondering as I'm going to get some hydroxo sublinguals in the meantime, but I've read that methylcobalamin is the best form(?) and I noticed significant improvements (aside from the obvious mental struggles), so weighing up whether it might be worth taking two weeks off and going for it with the methyl supplements to reinvigorate my system and B12 supplies and then switching to hydroxo for maintenance. Also, if you do have any recommendations re supplements/form ie hydroxo or otherwise that would be extremely helpful.

there are a number of process that involve B12 and a number of different steps that are involved in those processes where B12 may or may not be involved.

There are a lot of genes involved overall - with different variants affecting how different steps run so not really possible to say what is going on with any certainty because for each possible outcome there are probably 15+ different ways that outcome could happen.

There is, indeed a lot of (mis)information claiming that methyl is better. However, this ignores two key facts a) whilst methyl is a form that is used by processes in your cells it isn't the only one b) the B12 molecule in your blood has to have the bond with the methyl component broken so it can be combined with a protein that allows it to get through into your cell, and then it is recombined with a methyl component (or an adenosyl component) inside the cell depending on what is needed at the time.

Whilst there are, undoubtedly some people whose genes make them more or less efficient at the process that separates the methyl-bond combines it to TC2 and then breaks that bond in the cell, that certainly doesn't apply to everyone. For the vaste majority of people hydroxo and even cyano are going to be just as efficient at getting into your cells and becoming whatever form is needed.

The most likely thing is that you felt better because you actually had B12 getting into your cells and the form you were taking was irrelevant.

There are genetic variants that govern the COMT step in processes which recycle neurotransmitters - that can send that process into overdrive if you have two much methylcobalamin - and that would be one possible explanation for why you suffered from anxiety etc.

I don't use hydroxo sublinguals (I do use some adenosyl sublinguals) but my personal preference is nasal sprays - and I personally use a mix of hydroxo and methyl sprays. I haven't experienced any problems with the products that I have purchased from detoxpeople and the service is good - though occasionally products I normally use are out of stock. To be honest, as long as you are using a reputable source I personally doubt it makes much difference - the only possible difference is going to be the fillers that are used in tablets etc.

I bought these & within a couple of days felt I'll with anxiety/depression feelings. I didn't put it down to the tablets at first so kept taking them and got worse. I stopped after a week as I stated to wonder if it was the b12. When eventually I felt better I started them again & very quickly starred having the same symptoms again. I know I can't take them but I am absolutely fine with Nu u brand under the tongue tablets & also hydroxocobalamin injections

Thank you! I'm relieved to hear I'm not the only one who has experienced this - the anxiety has been crippling to say the least. I figured it might be the tablets after a quick google a couple of days ago and since stopped taking them, noticed a definite improvement today. Will check out Nu u brand - which ones do you have? I'm desperate to get some asap so the B12 symptoms don't return as the tablets were definitely helping with that!

The anxiety had hit me hard a few days after taking 500 ug for 10 days. I still have it and feel weird and out of my mind plus the burning in my legs got worse and I feel like there is burning behind my scalp. I pray this feeling subsides soon x

I just wanted to say thank you for this post. I'm having the EXACT same experience with the EXACT same brand and type of Methyl B12. It's caused my anxiety to be through the roof and I feel sick all the time. I stopped on Monday just gone and 6 days later I am still having effects. I wish I never touched the stuff.

Just want to give an olive branch to anyone who's wondering how long it takes to get back to normal after being poisoned with this stuff, as I couldn't find anyone sharing their experiences - it took about 12 days to get back to normal.

Hi AnnaR10 . I too experienced side-affects of taking methyl sub linguals or methyl tablets. Horrible anxiety in particular within about 48 hours of taking them. After figuring out the first time it may the tablets, I stopped them and the anxiety and other symptoms took a few days to subside. I tried taking methyl tablets again a few months later and within a few days had exactly the same symptoms, and they were way less in dosage as well....the crippling anxiety was awful. So it seems I can't touch even a crumb of that stuff without some sort of side-affect, including methyl folate as well. I stick to hydroxo injections and cyano supplements and have no problems with these.

All the best.

I think I am also sensitive to methyl tablets/sublinguals/drops. I've been having bouts of anxiety, sleeplessness, and overly sensitive emotions. As if the recovery from a B12 deficiency isn't bad enough!

I'm going to stop using methyl and see if these symptoms reduce, which I expect they will.
