I have a telephone consult with my GP on Friday and want to cover all the bases. I'm sure I'm missing some major questions but not thinking straight yet. Does anyone have any input into what else I should ask?
(copy of my note below)
Symptoms
Depression
, Burning feet/legs, Restless legs, Tinnitus, Fatigue, Memory problems, Poor concentration, Gasps of air, Clumsy, Feeling faint when raising to standing, with weak legs, Hair thinning, Lack of libido, Swollen finger joints, Right thumb contracts into palm, Stomach pain with wind and bloating.
History of heart disease and vitiligo in family
Questions
What is the cause of my deficiency? Are further tests planned?
Why am I not receiving the treatment outlined in the NICE guidelines, the NHS Scotland website and the Patient Information Leaflet, which all state injections every two days for two weeks or until symptoms have stopped improving? Rather I am prescribed one injection weekly for four weeks then one every three months.
For how long do I require the injections?
Since Treatment
I felt my mood improved in weeks 1-2. There was a worsening of the physical symptoms in week 3, in particular the tinnitus, burning and restless legs.

You have mentioned some symptoms that are normally considered to be neurological eg tinnitus, memory problems, weakness in legs, feeling faint, restless legs, burning sensations
The UK treatment regime for B12 deficiency where there are neuro symptoms is a loading injection every other day for as long as symptoms continue to get better then an injection every 2 months.
Have you checked these symptoms lists below to see if there are any other neuro symptoms you should mention?
And the BNF (British National Formulary) Chapter Section 1.2 which outlines UK B12 treatment for those with neuro symptoms. GP may well have a copy of BNF next to him on his desk/bookshelf.
I found it useful to read fbirder 's summary of B12 documents,. Link to summary in third pinned post on this forum.
Link about writing letters to GPs about B12 deficiency.
Things said in a consultation can get forgotten so may be worth writing a letter.
Thank you Sleepybunny. I'm at the surgery tomorrow for my 'last' loading dose so I shall hand in a letter then. This site and the people like yourself have been invaluable
Stomach pain and bloating are what a lot of PA patients get because of low/no stomach acid - Hypochlorhydria / Achlorhydria . I experienced this too . It was overcome with a probiotic and use of Betaine HCL with Pepsi . Digestive enzymes also help . Something acidic to drink with meals, like diluted organic apple cider vinegar with mother ,.Swedish bitters .
Thanks Wedgewood. I did have terrible acid reflux about 25 years ago and was treated with some form of antacid (can't remember what) for about two years. I was tested for H. pylori and it was negative. I wondered if it could be connected. I don't get the bloating regularly, possibly once a month. I've only used wind tablets but will look into the drinks.
