i was cooking dinner one night and got shortness of breath out of no where and it was horrible for weeks and i still have it. i asked my dr to test me for b12 and she said because a iron prick on my finger was 14 i wouldnt be low on b12. i begged her to test me and my level is 286. i am taking a supplement i started today a good one from the health food store just in case i have poor absorption . i get blurred vision am tired all the time burning in my heels freezing cold hands and feet with tingling in both dizziness no appitite and i lost 16 pounds in a month, i did cut out drinking 4 to 6 cans ok coke and up to three cups of coffee with cream and sugar i am thinking that is partly why i lost the weight. the breathlessness is the worst of all my symptoms. the oxygen monitor always shows anywhere from 96 to a hundred. i seen a pulmyoniligst and said was all good. i am desperate to figure this out. i live in new hampshire and need to find a better dr. are ther drs. that deal with vitamin deficiencies ?and can anyone help me with this. i dont know if i should take iron as i had blood work but i dont see that test on there just the finger stick they did. any help at all would be great...my quality of life is horrible

Was your Folate checked as this works with iron and B12 to make red blood cells?

Hi there sorry to hear about you being breathless. I had breathing issues over 18 month and after a battery of tests for heart lungs etc running machine, a simple Thyroxine tablet stopped it!!!! Xxxxx

I presume that the test your GP was referring to was a ferritin test - which has nothing to do with B12 -

In talking with your GP have you been talking about B12 deficiency or about pernicious anaemia/anaemia. Really sounds as if your GP is very confused about what B12 deficiency and how it works - which would be par for the course.

There is a huge overlap between the symptoms of B12 deficiency and vitamin D deficiency and it would be useful to rule out vitamin D deficiency by getting your levels up.

Supplementing B12 is potentially going to interfere with getting a diagnosis of B12 deficiency caused by an absorption problem so isn't really recommended until you have gone as far as you can in trying to get a diagnosis.

What is the strength of the supplement you are taking?

Have you been tested for thyroid problems?

Suggest that you get a copy of the blood tests that have been done so far.

I had very bad breathlessness, felt like choking or someone strangling me. For months i didn't know what it was, it turned out I was low on Folate. My doc gave me Folic Acid 400ug once daily and after a few weeks problem was gone. Could be that if it's low!

You're dealing with the vit D so that should be ok and you're also taking B12 so that should also be ok unless you have an absorption problem, which means you'll have to have B12 injections instead of oral supplement.

The other thing it can be is low iron. B12, Folic acid and iron as Clive said work together to produce red blood cells who's job it is to carry Oxygen around the body. That should do it.

The only other thing Is to get your doc to do a Thyroid test as someone else has mentioned.

It also sounds like you definitely have low b12 symptoms.

These are the main suspects.

Don't worry some good advice on here and you'll be ok soon.

🙂

i dont know if the folate has been checked. i am going back tomorrow and going to ask for it. i had to get really up set in tears to get her to check my b12. she sent me home with 4 medications for anxiety and ocd disorder which i have never had either in my whole life. she told me to stop looking for something wrong. i dont go to the dr unless i am in real distress, this is a dr that would beg me to keep appointments for checkups. i also was taking acid ruducers for years like candy and is one of the things that can lower the b12 i read. i had my thyroid checked it was .62 one month and the next 1.11 all they say is its fine. that is one i get very confused reading about. i had nodgels on my thyroid and they checked those the very next day as my sister had thyroid cancer and had hers removed and almost died so they didnt wait on that,. my b12 is 286 and she said take a supplement of 1000mcg i got 3000 mcg after learning you pee what is not used out. i am only 3 days in on this. i feel horrible and the headaces are awful as well i feel its from the shortness of breath even though my oxygen numbers are ok. thank you all for your responses and if and when i am better i already said what every i learn i will pass on to help people. drs. dont realize how horrible this is. i have no quality of life and i am 45 with 5 children (grown) and 10 grandbabies the 11th on the way.....i should be enjoing them but i literally cant do anything a shower is a chore...again thank you all
