MMA TEST ADVICE PLEASE

My husband finally had MMA test and we got results... but unfortunately it wasn't done until we had been heavily dosing him with both oral and mouth spray B12 at well above the RDA for 3 months. His results came back normal but since he has been taking massive B12 doses via a mouth spray and tablets will it be skewed? The supplementation seems to have made some difference - reduced pins and needles, mood swings, confusion etc but he is still very fatigued.

We are going to return to doc, and considering going private. Desperate for him to get injections.

Thanks in advance

yes, supplementation will have skewed - particularly if it is showing some improvement in symptoms. You'd need to stop for at least 3 months to get real results.

3 months really? I cannot imagine what my husband would be like without the b12 shots that long. He gets b12 shot every 3 weeks and b12 supplements daily - 6000mcg. And he still feels fatigued and awlful. Going to another city to see a doctor and hopefully this doctor will do something more for him.

He is by no means 'cured' by what we have been doing but it has helped a little - he is still VERY fatigued and is asleep way more than he is awake. Pins and needles have reduced a little as have confusion, mood and gait problems (a little). We thought the test had been done before we started on his supplementation but then found out no! Hence being in this situation now. Tis a nightmare!

So sorry to read this I’m dreadfully fatigued also it’s so horrible, was your husband diagnosed B12d deficient? What was his level of B12? Mine was 280 I also started self injecting recently so angry I never knew about the MMA test in functional B12d deficiency, I have no diagnosis as my serum was within range my active B12d was good at 112 also and intrinsic factor normal, so I now feel so concerned this is B12d at all! It’s all a mindfield 😢 x

WOW! Thanks

If the supplementation he's already taking is working (which lowered MMA and reduction of symptoms suggests is the case) then why not carry on with that?

It can take quite a while for the symptoms of a B12 deficiency to go away - and sometimes they don't clear completely.

It can't hurt to explain to the doc that the supplementation has been helping - and can he try a course of injections to see if that works better.
