Help re Active B12 results please.

I would appreciate some help with my friends active B12 result. He has difficulty using the internet. His recent result from Blue Horizon is;

Active B12 42.7 pmol/L Reference Range 25.1 - 165.0

I can see that this is low but do not know if this indicates Pernicious Anaemia.

Thanks a lot - Maddie

To be honest this must be another test system , to me the range is very short , however being close to bottom is not good for what ever age , certainly not if you have auto immune in your family .

Thanks for your reply. My friend had a result of 233 on the normal B12 test and I have advised him about supplementing with Methyl B12 supplements or self injecting as, his GP will not treat with this result.. Also, I've advised him to watch the You Tube videos of the PA Conference which are very informative. He takes antacid medication which will cause absorption issues. Thanks again - Maddie

If it is Pernicious Aneamia suppliments will not be absorbed into the intestines , it will have to be injected into muscle tissue but even then you will have to run top of the range , I have to keep my readings at 1000 in the old testing scheme to able to function , as you will see on the forum , there are no absolutes in human physciology , everyone and every circumstance is different .

The Medical Profession are driven by the information provided by commercial interest ,not patient outcomes , I have had 33yrs of fighting with them to survive and suffered irreversible damage twice , first with G/M insulin in 1980 and then in 2009 with Ciprofloxacin (an evil anti biotic ) .

You have to do your research and find your own resolutions , they look you in the eye and deny everything , selfhelp groups like this are the only resource available to use

other peoples experience .

My Dentist got me a referral , I had an excruciatingly sore mouth and tongue , fizzy drink touthpaste blew my head off , Drs mouth wash made it twice as bad .

My Friend has also had a long struggle with the NHS and various health issues that have been misdiagnosed and caused him harm. He has had to work out his problems himself and is now trying to get help with his low B12. I have told him that low stomach acid & antacid meds will interfere with absorbtion and are possibly the reason for his low levels.

I think that he is trying to get his doctor to treat him even though I have told him that his in range result will mean that he won't get treatment and that learning to self inject is his best option.

Thanks again for your help - Maddie

My husband had similar low results for B12 and active B12, but he also had the MMA test which was normal, and homocysteine which was a little too high. Since he has no symptoms at all, I've just got him taking a good B-complex and a sublingual B12 spray, as I feel it's important for his future health to reduce that homocysteine level. I think if he had had symptoms of B12 deficiency I would have encouraged him to seek injections.

Thanks for this advice, I'll look in to the MMA test.

I've told my friend about low B12 and elevated homocysteine and its effect on the brain. I use B12 supplements and think that they are vital as even without PA, out ability to absorb nutrients diminishes with age - Maddie
