DO YOU TAKE BETA BLOCKERS AS ONE OF YOUR REGULAR MEDS?

Beta blockers are typically prescribed to help control high blood pressure and I would estimate that PD is considered more of a senior citizen condition and many may have high blood pressure, increasing the chance that you may potentially be using a beta blocker to control HBP?

If that is correct, this newer PM study (March 2019) suggests that beta blockers may not be the best choice for PWPs.

Thanks Art. Good to know.

I figured it was worth mentioning because although a neurologist may or may not be aware of this, every PWP should be! We are our own best advocate!

Good grief! You would think if one worked they wouldn’t have to keep producing more variations on the theme!

Yes, you would think so, but apparently not and I am not even sure if that is a complete list!

A helpful post, Art. Here in the UK, beta blockers are not the medication of choice for HBP following the ASCOT study.

in reply to

Osidge,

Here in the states , I can't even begin to count how many people have told me they are taking Atenolol to control their blood pressure and that is only one from that long list!

Art

in reply to

In the UK we go for calcium channel blockers or ACE inhibitors. Beta blockers tend to be used only for specific cardiac problems.

in reply to

Osidge,

Interestingly, calcium channel blockers, may offer reduced risk of PD :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/258...

And use of ACE Inhibitors may confer a reduced risk of falls in PWP :

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/282...

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Definitely sounds like these two may be more appropriate for PWPs!

I am also on bendroflumethiazide and doxazosin - the latter also having benefits for my enlarged prostate. You might find this interesting. I was a participant in the trial. ascotstudy.org

I didn't understand how to use the link you posted. When I clicked on it, it took me to a page with links, but each one that I hit seem to take me to advertising. What am I doing wrong and how did the study go for you?

Hi Art

I have tried the link and it brings you to the home page. A menu enables you to get to specific parts of the site.

Here are a couple of other links:

I enjoyed my 5 years in the study. They were a great research team.

Those two worked, Thank you!

Thanks Art. I have been on metoprolol since just before my diagnosis 16 years ago. I will mention this to my dr next visit, as I know it is hard and dangerous to titrate after being on it so long.

Hi,I was also placed on beta blocker for anxiety 28years ago before my diagnosis.Could this drug have caused our PD?

GBAMIGOD: My next Dr. visit is May 23. But I will surely let you know. I had a different Dr. back then and I think I may have had a VERY slight hand tremor and a rapid heart rate at the time, but I was not officially diagnosed for about a year or so later. Are you still on the Beta Blocker?

GBAMIGOD in reply to Ep0522

Yes,just a small dose.I will also contact my MD for appoinment to discuss this.I am sure that it is not safe to stop any medication abruotly if you have been on it for a long time.

The interesting thing is that a calcium channel blocker drug named isradipine, use d for treating blood pressure is currently being studied, because it has been found that it could slow down PD progression.

What about occasional use for anxiety when you have pd? It’s the only med I very occasionally use.

Good information - thanks for sharing. Just want to add that beta blockers are also commonly prescribed for heart arrhythmia to regulate heart rate and I almost ended up on one of them after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Have to keep this article handy for my cardiologist if he'll ever decide to prescribe a beta blocker.
