A good run to the boarder so you can walk to the bathroom.

Magnesium vitamin or eat food that contain magnesium

Yes magnesium oxide.. I like the 'Now' brand .. I take 1 tsp in a glass of water and also add lemon juice ... 1/2 squeezed lemon.. also you can add a tsp of inulin or psyllium for fibre..

The magnesium pulls water into the large bowel acting as a stool softener.. the fibre gives the bowel something to squeeze against.. the citric acid of the lemon acts with the magnesium..

It is known as the magnesium flush.

I've been trying to resolve that issue for 13 yrs and I finally found something that works for me and you'll probably laugh, but Cheerios with blueberries and coconut/almond milk and during the day I eat about 3 handfuls of mixed nuts (unsalted) (walnuts, pecans, cashews, pumpkin seeds), no peanuts, I read peanuts are not good for PwP's) and then I add dried cranberries & yogurt chips. I've tried oatmeal, chia seeds, prunes, etc. & this is the only thing that has worked.

Prunes help a lot, plus exercise, and fiber in the diet. With me and my PD, constipation is an ongoing problem.

My daughter is an accountant and she suggested that I work it out with a number two pencil. (Very old, bad joke)

I love her sense of humor! This made both my husband and I laugh!

Early in my career as a physical therapist, I worked in hospitals. Frequently patients would complain about constipation to avoid a PT session. I would tell them that the inactivity could only contribute to the problem. If they were still refusing I would offer to ensure them that I could solve their problem by simply giving them their bill.

With Cancer diagnosis and treatment- 3 yrs ago, discovered and continue to use generic (cheap) "Colace", stool softener, "soft gels" I call them, 2 or 3 pills every day. Says 3 is maximum dose, and works well to keep "regular"; And then, sometimes the occasional Miralax, as needed....

Yes, this works very well and I have taken up to 750 mg in a day without adverse effect.

More recently, diarrhea as a side effect of melatonin has solved the problem but I do not recommend this solution.

Mannitol gets you going and may stop Parkinson's progression. It should be mandatory.

park_bear profile image

Causes me terrible gas and bloating. Should NOT be mandatory.

Cost: Gives me a bit of gas

Benefits: Better sleep, resolves constipation, reduces tremor. Definitely improves sense of smell. Allows you to eat some carbs ( the alternative is to live on fats only, which is very hard to do).

Basically reverses most symptoms for me. But still early days ( 10 months).

park_bear profile image
park_bear in reply to alexask

That is good information to know. How much do you take?

alexask profile image
alexask in reply to park_bear

It varies - but generally a very heaped teaspoon in the morning in Coffee with a spoonful of coconut oil then I may do some more during the day. My ideal would be to have be ketogenic in the morning and for lunch (lunch is generally a salad in summer cauliflower cheese in winter with some pork scratchings). Dinner is whatever is available. If you see my profile I list out everything else I do to reduce symptoms.

Thing is - I am at the very early stages so I at least have the benefit of instantly seeing improvements which those further down the road (to hell) may not benefit from, or may only see after a period of time.

But again it is also quite clear that different people react in different ways to different treatments.

This is a struggle for me. My integrative GP says you need fibre, water and the right bacteria in your gut to overcome constipation. She also says it is vital to poop more than once a day to move out toxins.

The good bacteria needed are in the lower colon and they can't just be taken in a probiotic. They need the right environment in which to flourish, so it's back to resistant starches, less sugar, dairy and eggs and lots of veggies.
