My GP prescribed Amitriptyline for me about six weeks ago. I'm having really horrible side effects but GP says they will wear off. I can't sleep, feel really drowsy and my thoughts are very negative and muddled up. I know medication can affect people differently but has anyone else felt like this with Amitriptyline? Also how long could it be before these side effects wear off?

How long will I feel like this?
Hi Mazzmo, I’ve not been on the forum much recently and just looking through the posts. Im sorry you’ve been having such problems with amitriptyline. I’ve not been prescribed it for many years but remember feeling extremely sleepy on it. My consultant and I decided it wasn’t really helping me so we stopped it.
How are you feeling with it now?
Hi madonbrew, thanks for your response. I'm glad to hear that you're not taking that Amitriptyline anymore. I hope you have some pain control that does its job well without any bad side effects. I had started to think of ways to kill myself which I'll never actually do and I never had thoughts like that before so I told my doctor and she gave me Gabapentin instead. I feel that along with Dihydrocodeine I am coping with pain pretty well now. At last!!
That’s a really horrible and serious side effect ! I’m glad you spoke to your GP about it and they’ve found you another option for pain relief!
I have quite a few issues with pain meds…although thankfully 😅 every cloud has a silver lining…because my pancreas is completely shot, I don’t really experience pain anymore on that front. But I have problems with painkillers because I also have chronic kidney disease and severe asthma so most painkillers are bad for one of my ailments!
I understand the awful side effect…prednisolone has the same effect on me. Sometimes I just have to be treated with it for my asthma, but my asthma nurse rings me throughout the course a few times to check if I’m ok. It’s really awful isn’t it!
Hopefully you’ll manage to stay relatively well and pain controlled with the new meds!
Take care!
Dee
Hi, Dee, I'm Marion by the way. Yeah it is awful having to take medication that makes you feel bad. It's good that nurse keeps in touch to check your OK when you need steroids. I'm so glad about that. I have good nurses too at endocrine clinic. It really helps to know they're there. Take care, best wishes Dee.
