You are invited to participate in a study aimed at identifying the barriers and facilitators in chronic pain communication and how using visual tools could overcome some barriers. Are you a young person, i.e. aged 18 – 30 years of age, who experiences chronic pain (i.e., pain that last for longer than 6 months). As part of this interview, you will also be asked to choose 2 (out of 8 available) creative tools to test out and evaluate using an iPad. A key difficulty of chronic pain is the invisibility of pain and being able to effectively communicate pain experience to others, to gain other people’s full understanding of the impact of this long-term condition. This research will provide a £20 voucher to take part in a face-to-face interview (1 hour 30 minutes), during which you will be asked to share your experiences with communicating your pain to others, such as healthcare provider.
This study will aim to provide evidence on the barriers and facilitators young adults with chronic pain experience in communicating their pain experiences to healthcare providers, and how creative tool (which create a visual representation of pain) can aid communication and make an invisible condition, visible for healthcare providers. The results of this study will be used to design an appropriate creative tool to enhance patient communication by using visual aids, for example an iPad, to promote clarity of patient to clinician communication.
