Hi everyone, this is the first question I have asked on Health Unlocked. Does anyone have experience of undergoing neurophysiology tests, I have an appointment due soon and just wondered what to expect. Thanks in advance x

I went to the neuroscience dept last week due to a problem with my sight that might have been caused by my brain. The tests just check your strength in upper body limbs and make a report of current health status ect. I was given a test for a muscular disease that I had no symtoms for and referred to Medical decisions unit as my BP was high. Many hours later I left the unit in the dark and got a taxi home without even ever seeing a doctor in that unit. I now have to go to my GP and have the said tests done in the surgery. So beware its not frightening but you could end up like me with something else needing checking which takes time. Plus painkillers are coming under question as they can cause other illness if taken regularly. Good luck , stay safe

I had Neurophysiology tests for peripheral neuropathy in my lower legs and ankles. My test involved being attached to a machine similar to a heart monitor (pads, wires). For me they were put on my legs and one arm, a current then made my legs jerk uncontrollably, which was uncomfortable. One test was done by thickish needle in one leg quickly. Not every test gives the result you want, but my test showed I have Axonal Sensory Neuropathy. For me, it confirmed, which others didn’t believe, that I had peripheral neuropathy and is very painful. I would ask someone to drive me to where you are having the test. My legs felt painful inside and I had an extremely uncomfortable drive home. I’m in the UK. Good luck.

I had this couple of years ago on my arms & one leg, also known as nerve conduction test. As someone else has said it involves having small patches stuck on your arms or legs & a small electrical current is then passed between them. It can be slightly uncomfortable but not painful. The tests determine if there is any nerve damage, in my case due to diabetes. The test results are then examined by a consultant at hospital & then a report is sent to your GP or whoever sent you to have the tests. It’s very unlikely that you will be given results on day of the test

Thanks everyone who has commented, I am in the UK and have been waiting a year on these tests. I suffer from many health conditions and have seen so many consultants I have lost count. They offered me back surgery but it would not help with the pain in my back, only the sciatica in my leg - my back pain is much worse. The appointment for the neurophysiology tests has been cancelled as the consultant had to isolate so I have no idea when I will get them now x
