I suffer chronic pain from an autoimmune disease called polymigria (muscle pain) and take steroids for it, i also fell in Jan of this year and broke my femur and left arm and am suffering such severe pain from the limb its almost unbearable. My doctor gives me codeine 30mgs but is talking about reducing them. I know i am now codeine dependant but its the least of my worries. I find the constant day in day out pain hard to cope with- my limb break is healing but still have severe pain. Any tips on other types of pain relief? Molfosey

Sorry you are in so much chronic pain. I have had chronic pain in my joints and tendons, also referred pain. Have you considered the use of a TENS machine they do work for many people. Also an EMS can also help toning up muscle groups.. Tendons also need some form of treatment to loosen and reduce pain and lack of movement. If your stiff and sore and the problem has healed, using that lovely pool will also tone and reduce stiffness, these exercises do not need actual swimming the weight of the water when moving the inflicted area will losen and tone the areas you broke.

I gather you are out of plaster ?

After a break depending on time you will also need to tone up other areas.

Water is a wonderful tool to get over the problem you have had

Can you try passionflower. Curcumin, Boswellia, or Magnesium?

I have Fibromygelia, RLS, diabetes and peripheral neuropathy as well as back issues so I’m no stranger to muscle pain. I am tomorrow swapping from MST morphine tablets to patches as I have been on the MST so long. However, I find diazepam 5mg three times a day an excellent relaxant of my tense muscles plus the anxiety relief they bring. I believe they are in a group of muscle relaxant drugs that help. I also use deep heat spray and muscle rub cream. You can get both of these from the £1 shop instead of £3.95 elsewhere. Heat is also my best friend. I struggle with the bath but use hot flannels, hot water bottles and a bean bag that can be microwaved. It may sound silly, but my cat lies the length of me or curls up next to me and his heat, purrs and company provide excellent relief. Caspian cream may be a good option, it’s natural, made from chillies, but so strong it needs a prescription. Good luck with finding something that works. Ps as the other reader said magnesium is a great help, better as a cream or salts in bath. I do both but take a supplement too.
