Sleep apena.

Merry Christmas to you all. I was diagnosed with sleep apena a few months ago and got given the machine to aid better sleep. My concern is that it sometimes sounds like it's blowing a gale when i remove the mask to goto the toilet in the middle of the night. . My husband slept In the same bed as me the other night, and he said the machine is very noisy when I'm asleeping, it blows out alot of air. Now we are not sure if it's doing it because that's when my breathing stops so it's giving me a gust of air to help me breathe. Now I don't know if this is normal, as it's the first time we've slept in the same bed for along time due to my noisy sleep antics. Can anyone give me any advice on this if it's normal, or I should contact the hospital and tell them what's going on , I'd be grateful. Many thanks. 🤔.

Hi Debbs73 I hope you had a beautiful Christmas. Everyone I know that has a partner with that sleep apnea machine sleeps in separate bedrooms because of the noisy machine. Sorry to tell you this. Love Lola

Hi Lola. We already sleep in different bedrooms due to my nightly antics of singing, talking and making other weird noises. This is how they found out I had sleep apena, as I had a sleep over at the hospital wired up to all sorts of machines.( I resembled Frankenstein), an that's how they found out that I have it. Thankyou for replying. Xx

I have had a CPAP machine for over 20 years, we have never slept in separate beds, certainly the very first one was very noisy, my Wife used earplugs with that one. But as the machines got smaller and quieter, she was able to discard these, when the mask is removed, it is louder, naturally, but if the mask is fitting properly, the wind noise is muted, so that it only takes a few nights for us both to get used to it. But please try to get back to your Sleep Clinic, they will examine what is happening, and be able to recommend a solution, that is what they are there for, to aid patients get the best use out of the equipment, and get the maximum benefit. Hope this is of some help, but do not hesitate to come back to this site, there are plenty of people who are glad to help.

Hi, I use a CPAP machine and it does take some getting used to. I’d use ear plugs for you and your partner until you get used to it. Also have a word with your sleep clinic as the setting may be too high for max pressure. If it wakes you through the night, there’s a little button at side of the power button which you should press and this will reduce the pressure to 4, which is the minimum. It’ll gradually build up again to what pressure you need to continue sleeping/breathing. The machine does tend to blow hard if it feels your throat close up etc, hence the need for extra force. Definitely use ear plugs for a while, but also speak to your clinic for advice. Best of luck and take care.

Hi, I've had Sleep apnoea for years, diagnosed 3 years ago. When I get up in the night to go to the toilet, I press the Off button, then turn it back on when I get back into bed. I use a Resmed machine (resmed.com/us/en/healthcare... with a humidifier), and you can review the previous night's sleep, it gives stats of hours slept, a mask fit icon i.e. smiley face good, angry face bad, and AHI (average Hypoxic index I believe). At diagnosis I was at 61, now my levels are always below 2. Have a look if any instructions came with the machine, or google it to find instructions (e.g. youtube.com/watch?v=7lpC5LD... The reason I get the "air hissing noise" loudly is when my mouth falls open (I only have a nasal mask), it may just be your mask isn't fitting well, or you need an alternative style.

This site is very good if you are in the UK, lots of advice sleep-apnoea-trust.org/

Good luck, keep persevering, it is so worth it when you get it right.

Hiya yeah I do the same turn it off and then no on again. Thankyou for that link I'll have a look at that. Yeah I to use a resmed and have the app on my phone to tell me how I've done. Yeah they did say I can try something else if this doesn't work for me.

Hi Debbs73

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea 10 years ago and have used a cpap machine every night since. The blowing sound/air is completely normal - but check that it's not escaping from around the edge of your mask. I'm not sure what machine you're using but the modern ones are very quiet now ( I recall my first one which sounded like a Boeing 747 landing!)

I hope this helps with your concern.

Best regards

Jon

Hi Jon. Thanks for your reply. A few people have said to make sure that it's normal to make noises . Last night was really bad, it felt like it was blowing a proper gale. I could feel the air coming from the pipe I'm guessing the mask wasn't secure enough. So going to see how I get on tonight, if still doing the same tomorrow I'll need to get it checked. I forgot to mention job that the machine I use is a resmed one. I was only diagnosed a few months ago after going for a sleep at the hospital being wired up to all sorts of machines. The hospital tried me with a full face mask but couldn't get away with it, so I'm using one that goes over my nose. But they did say if I couldn't manage with that I could offer me something else.

Thankyou all very much for your input and advice. Xxx
