Hi this does sound like sciatica though no one can diagnose you over the net. The only way you will find out for sure is going to see your doctor for a firm diagnosis. There is not much a doctor can do but at least you should be able to get some painkillers and professional advice.
I know how painful this can be as my mother suffered from this for several months. The good news is that most cases seem to pass in time but you would always need to be careful of your back in the future. Meantime try not to have to lift anything but if you have to make sure you bend with your knees and make them take the strain. You need gentle and regular exercise and maybe a chiropractor or an osteopath could help.
Your first port of call though needs to be your doctor. I know how you feel coz I hate going too and try and avoid them like the plague! Let us know how you get on please. x
My sciatica involves aching, tingling, 'bugs crawling' sensations down my left leg, sometimes allthe way to my toes. Sounds like you are experiencing something else, likely further up the spine a bit. Definitely worth a trip to the doc. If it continues unabated for weeks it is more than a muscle strain. Walking gently often helps, whether spine/disc related or simple muscle strain. Lying down to relax things only good in small doses I have learned the hard way.
You don't mention how long this side pain has been going on. But I wonder if you're not constipated. Often times the first place we feel it is on the left side of the abdomen. This is because the colon makes a sharp turn there which is a likely place for to back up to.
