Coping without Painkillers...

After suffering for many years with Perthes disease i went on to have a total hip replacement but still experience daily pain from that area which is made worst by protruding discs in my lower back..

I have been on a cocktail of painkillers for sometime but now i am trying to distance myself from them to seek alternative treatment in aid to relieve my pain.

I would like to know if anyone has found alternative pain relief rather than taking copious amounts of Tramadol etc..

Many thanks,

Charlie

Hi Charlie take care when ditching pain killers but I'm sure that you already know that. Don't go all cold turkey. Have you managed to get referred to a pain clinic. they can bounce you on to a pain management course. Which I found very empowering. Did bugger all for the pain but helped me think about how to live with it.

The best of alternative therapy that I have tried is a Tens machine. I had to give it time and play about with positioning the pads but it does help. it just shifts my focus for a bit as it throbs away.

Good hunting,

If you're in pain anyway even with all the pain killers it might be best to reduce them gradually and stop them. I couldn't find anything that really helped so I don't take anything. So at least I don't have to put up with the side effects as well as the pain! The pain clinic can suggest techniques such as pacing, distraction etc. tens machine can also be good. So can good sleep, a good book, sunshine, doing things you enjoy, staying positive, enjoying people's company etc etc whatever makes you happiest.

There are alternatives you can try. First of all if you are going to come off all pain killers come off slowly. If you come off too fast you could get a bad reaction.

may have some links to helpful information.

McTimony chiropractic may prove helpful in dealing with some of the tight muscles in the back and probably ribs as well. Cannot advise when to try this as you have to deal with side effects of reducing pain medication.

Alexander Technique will prove helpful as it will deal with some bad postural habits that you have developed over the years as result of handling your health disability.

Meditation and mindfulness techniques will help in observing the things that you do that lead to greater pain and the things that you do that lead to lesser pain. From this you can develop strategies that help in better management of pain.

Hope this helps

If you have been on them for a long time, it will take a long time to stop but don't despair, it can be done. First tell the doctor. She/he might recommend other pills to help you step down.. just say "I'm seeing if I can do it, I might have to keep going on my regular pills" that way you leave the door open to keep getting the prescriptions.
